Obesity is a disease is the classic sense of the word. That it is caused (sometimes) by voluntary behavior does not make it any less of a disease. I might add that all obesity is not caused by overeating. I know several people with thyroid deficiencies, some of which are hundreds of pounds overweight, and they eat like birds.

In America, 2 out of every 3 people are over weight and 1 out of 3 is considered obese. It is estimated that 400,000 people died last year in the US alone from obesity related illness. It is the second leading killer behind heart disease, a condition that ironically can be caused by obesity.

the only disease these 90% of these people have is lazyness. I realize some have thyriod and othe problems but most fat people do not. Most of these fat basterds do nothing physical and thus they have the matabolism of a tomato. add to that if they eat 3000cals a day and only burn off 1000, they are going to get fat. its not a disese spidey its simple science. i would think you of all people would realize that.

                that's not the point.

it's not a disease in it of itself, but obesity is the PRECURSOR for many life threatening illnesses. like the analogy he made to smoking - smoking itself is not a disease, but it CAUSES disease.

it is because the majority of americans who are obese will develop these illnesses that obesity now is classified as a disease under medicare so that PREVENTATIVE services can be offered. and in the case of obesity, that would be programs such as weight watchers - and unforutnately procedures such as gastric bypass.

it's about the government trying to pay for things and programs to educate americans to REDUCE obesity thereby decreasing obesity related diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart attacks and strokes.

Tried it. Doesn't work. Takes a serious wake up call it seems, to motivate a person to change their whole lifestyle.

I work in a nice restaurant. And from my experience both thin and overweight people order the worst greasy food all the time. I just dont understand how someone who is overweight continues to eat plates of nachos, deep fried fare and have room for desert time and time again?! There is a day when we offer appitizers for 1/2 price and it seems to me the local "fatties" (sorry, had to say that) come out only on those days and eat three full appetizers to themselves because they are each half price.

IM sorry, but thats not okay in my books when someone goes and complains this is a disease and so on when this is something I see everyday and that people are doing it to themselves. I realize that obesity is a precursor to many health problems, but I feel the same for those who smoke; its a choice you make.

If you really didn't like your body and were sick of being overweight, you wouldnt eat like a pig and sit on your ass.

Exactly- And before people get too sympathetic towards fat people, remember that it is usually fat, lazy people who justify their own slobbishness by criticizing and hating people like me who do train and maintain their bodies. How many times have you been in a crowd and heard someone say, "I could look like that if I took steroids." As if genetics and hard work have nothing to do with being in good shape. You will never here me criticize or make fun of people for being out of shape because I don't care if other people work out or not. It just pisses me off that so many people now are blaming their fatness on society, McDonalds, or those of us who bust our asses every day in the gym.
