i'm just wondering if anyone here has ever had 1 or more panic attacks, just out of nowhere. i've experienced a couple of them months ago, haven't really had one lately, but i stay so worried that i'm gonna have one again i really can't even enjoy my life. the first few times i had them my heart started beating out of control, started feeling sharp pains everywhere, couldn't breathe, tingling in my fingers and toes and a little dizzy and nausea, and worst of all, just felt like i was going to die. i went to the doctor a FEW times because of it because i thought something was seriously wrong with my heart but they found nothing wrong except for a mitral valve prolapse, which is said to be very common, which could cause these symptoms. just wondering if any of you guys have ever had or have these, to maybe put my mind at ease here. i've been freaking out for months here scared that an attack will come on and i'll just die!!!

hey bro, i've had these a few times before as well... couple of things i might add to give your mind some ease;
first off, in my case i had a nurse suggest to me it could actually be an allergic reaction to something i've eaten, which may cause those symptoms and the racing heart (tachycardic), if you only had them that month and they were close together, think back as to whether you ate anything unusual during that time that might've been the cause, there are some obscure food allergies out there that might be to blame
there's a coping mechanism i know of which is to rate the feelings of anxiety when they occur on a 1 to ten scale. virtually all panic attacks have a sudden onset and then wane away. if it starts, at say a 6, 10 being sheer pee my pants panic, wait a little while and then evaluate how you feel. you're so caught up in the moment while having a panic attack that your fight or flight instinctual mindset isn't thinking about how/if the symptoms are alleviating and getting better. if you force yourself to evaluate it you'll notice it's only a 5, or 4, and that it's indeed getting better, that in itself is reassurance and allows you to ride the last little bit out knowing its getting better.
and lastly, you may ask your dr. for a prescription medication. my dr. gave me a 10 dose only prescription for zanax in case it hits again, that was 3 months ago and i haven't had one since and still have the entire prescription, but having that on me lets me know i have a fallback and takes away the panic associated with anticipating the potential for another attack. unfortunately the only meds they have for panic attacks have proven to be habit forming in the long run, so i avoid them except when absolutely necessary as i don't like to take many medications anyways (i prefer to not worry about medication interactions etc.) but your dr. should be willing to give you something to have on hand should another attack strike while you're at work, away from home or the dr.'s office etc. best of luck bro!

I`m actually pretty well accquainted with panic attacks i`m afraid to say. I have anxiety disorder and had agoraphobia (wouldnt leave my house) but over time it`s gotten better and they have started to go away. they can be pretty traumatic and can create many different symptoms to scare the person. try to remember when ones coming to sit down breathe deeply and know that it will pass with time, on average a panic attack lasts 20 minutes in total including the onset.

I posted this on a different board today but I'll repost it here for you. Glad to see the members here giving you understanding and support. Lots of folks don't realize it isn't JUST STRESS. Hell, I can deal with some stress but this stuff can be debilitating.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've had them from time to time before in the past, got some medicine for awhile, didn't like it so dropped it and just learned how to deal with them. Kinda like talking yourself out of it....
Well all this past week I've been getting them. Progressively worse. Tightness in the chest at first, then add difficulty catching my breath to that.... not pleasant.
Had two today! Worse I've had yet. The first was this morning in the shower. I wasn't even thinking about anything other than getting the soap out of my hair and all of a sudden it starts, chest tightens up and starts to hurt, can't catch my breath, can feel my face turning beet red and then all of a sudden my limbs feel like they are going out from under me and I'm gonna fall. I sat down quickly on the floor and just waited for it to pass.
Feeling better later on, off I go to get some groceries. In the middle of the meat section (how stressfull is that right?) Same scenario as before begins to happen so I head to the checkout with half of what I'd intended on getting and the lady at the register was like "You okay Ma'am?". I just told her to ring it through quickly please I need to leave which she did bless her heart because I'm sure I looked a fright! By the time I got to the truck I could barely lift the bags let alone myself in. Sat in the parking lot for 15 minutes till it subsided and I felt I could drive.
Think I'm gonna have Sweets take my to the doc.....

I had a couple of mild ones when I was younger and one pretty serious one with a few milder ones right after 9/11. Never got treatment by a dr. because they were infrequent and I knew what was going on and what set them off. I can't imagine living with them on a regular basis.
Hope those of you that get them regularly is able to get it under control.

The problem with panic attacks is that they feed themselves. You start feeling a bit anxious, your breathing gets a bit labored, you feel spacey, etc. You start thinking, "damn, is this a heart attack or something", and on and on it goes. The more you think about it the worse it gets. About three years ago, I came back to the office from lunch and went to the bathroom, while I was standing there taking a leak, a sudden rush of something, I didn't know then what it was, and I thought I was going to pass out right then and there. I kept thinking, "Damn, I don't want someone to have to come in here and get me and find me passed out on the floor with my dick in my hands". I finally made it back to my office and laid down for a bit, but still felt weird. Later on I was much better, but still wondered what the deal was. The next day I went to the Dr.. He checked my heart and other vital stuff and pronounced me fine. He told me what I had experienced was a full blown panic attack. I wasn't under anymore stress than usual, nothing different was going on in my life. He said that they just happen, and sometimes for no particular reason. He prescribed a 1/2 mg. Xanax 3 times/day. I did that for about a week then stopped. Now, I always have them with me. I've had a few "almosts" since, but I pop in a Xanax and I'm fine. Good luck with yours. BB

In my episode yesterday I actually found myself holding the frame on the passenger side of the truck trying to lift groceries onto the floor board and debating whether or not I should throw my purse in before I attempted my trip to the drivers side so someone wouldn't steal my purse if I didn't make it there.Originally posted by buccaneer19
