A well rounded diet shouldn't need much in the way of supplements. However, stonecold is right on-there are some that it is advantageous to make sure you get enough of. I also take extra C, E, B. Vitamins that are antioxidants are very helpful for very active people. I also take some pills for healthy fats - flaxseed and omega 3's.
Also, as a side note, I have found glucosamine sulfate/chondroitin to help quite a bit with joint pain caused by heavy lifting. The thing that sucks is that it took about 9 months to feel the effects.

According to "The Complete Guide to Anti-Aging Nutrients" by Sheldon Saul Hendler, professor of medicine at UCSD, Centrum is the best.
By the way, this book belongs on the bookshelf of everyone interested in the fitness lifestyle, IMHO.

A multi-vitamin is good because your diet may not provide all the vitamins on some days ( I take Centrum - inexpensive and has good dosages). Glucosamine/chondroitin does good for about 40% of the population's joints. Salmon oil capsules have proven cardiovascular benefits - lower cholesterol, clear the veins of plaque buildup plus may prevent Altzeimer's and macular degeneration of the eyes. A low dosage aspirin (81 mg) seems to counter low inflammation levels that studies are showing cause heart attacks and artery damage.

I would only used a food based multi-vitamin that you could only buy at a reputable health food store. Unfortunitely, Centrum vitamins are synthetic based and your body really can't break them down and absorb them like it does food. My multi of choice is KAL's Enhanced Energy.

many of the mass produced vitamins use sources that the body can't digest readily, such as oyster shells for vitamin C. there are many stories of people having to have their sump tanks drained and finding clogs of vitamins that still haven't broken down. ever wonder why almost all multi-vitamins are colored brown or red? So it's not so obvious you're shitting most of it out when you look in the bowl. that said, if i overtrain w/o taking vitamins my immune system weakens, so i take them at night figuring it's the only time I'm not receiving nutrients from my regular food intake, this way i'll always have it in my blood stream. many brands are now advertising that their product will break down in water within a certain amount of time, though i have no information as to whether they are more effective or not.

no its not. lol. Centrum is not on the top of any list by any means bro. Go with a GNC multi, Beverly, and so on. Not the ones you by in walmart for 3 bucks. :)Originally posted by hitmansb

What about the old vinegar test?
Put your multi in a few tablespoons of vinegar, if it doesn't dissolve in a few miuntes then it's not gonna digest/absorb well.
I try to get as much as I can from my food, but a little extra never hurt. So I take a multi in the morning and get ready for it..........a Flintstone chewable before bed. Fucking A right I do. I prefer Wilma in orange.
