  • 5.8Ghz Portable phone.

I swear to god I think they just make this Ghz shit up. I have a 5.8Ghz phone and the damn thing sounds just like the old 900mhz. 5.8Ghz = 5800mhz so you would think it would be a little better but nope. Pretty cool looking phone though. lol

Yes they are supposed to be better and techinically speaking itis, but I only noticed a subtle difference between my 12 yr old 900mhz and my 3 yr old 2.4ghz. Maybe if you buy the expensive ones by Siemens or something then you can go to the store down the road and still have a connection. Who knows....

supposedly the 5.8 Ghz phones are more secure from being eavesdropped on. I don't remember the explanation for that though.

5.8 GHz isn't supposed to work further from the source or be any better, it's a different frequency that the phone works on and so is harder to eavesdrop on w/ walkie talkie's, cbs, cells, etc.

I have the exact same phone.and it dosen't work any further than the old 900mhz one.only reason I got that phone because my microwave owen and the 2.4ghz phone I had was on the same wave lenght so I couldn't use my microwave and my phone at the same time.while I was on the phone if any one in the house turn the microwave on I used to get this annoying loud static.

I have worked extensively in 2.4 GHz and 5.8GHz frequency spectrum. It is a speciality of mine- wireless communications. Deese is right about his microwave affecting a 2.4GHz phone because they DO operate on the exact same frequency. Both 2.4 and 5.8 GHz phones are actually microwave spectrum. It's the ISM (Industrial, Scientific, Medical) band frequency and NEITHER telephone is secure from eavesdroppers because they are both unlicensed band frequencies subjected to interference as well as eavesdroppers. Another person nearby with a phone operating on the same frequency will be able to hear your conversations in many cases. There is no encryption to protect your communication.

If you don't believe me, just walk down the sidewalk in front of homes on your street with it turned on and you'll eventually find a dial tone from someone else using that frequency. Try changing channels on your phone too and you'll probably catch a signal from someone else's phone base even faster. This holds true for 900MHz, 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz. They are NOT secure, so don't have any illicit conversations on them! You can also have your credit card info stolen in this respect as well if you're making a transaction on a cordless phone. Be careful!

Cordless telephone manufacturers have migrated to 5.8GHz (shorter wavelength than 2.4GHz means less distance) because of the flood of other 2.4GHz phones and domestic microwave interference in the home.

                      .
