I want to get it for my bf, and I don't know what brand is good or what parts I need. I was thinking it made most sense to get it for his car, but since I don't know when he'll get deployed again, maybe something can work in his car but would also work on its own with an adapter or something. I looked at BESTBUY.com and it seems the price range is around 100-200. I don't know where to begin though, what exactly I need, or if its even worth it.

All input will be greatly appreciated.

xm radio is badass, perfect gift to get him!

you can get it installed in your car, think it cost around 300 just for the installation alone. but it also adapts to a radio (so you can take it out of the car). they have different versions. it may cost a little extra but well worth it.

i dont have it buy my buddy does, definitely badass!

everyone is different i had it for a year and hardly used it. true there is straight music. but they play one good song and then 5 shitty ones. i remember XM only being 10 buck a month and they do have the ones like mastakillah said that go from car to house or portable. oh yea they say it sounds like a CD no way.

If you're gonna get one get Sirius. A friend has xm and he says it's not good cause they don't play popular music. Sirius plays the good stuff and they have NFL. It'll cost around $150 for equipment and you can install yourself if you're handy. $300 sounds like alot.

Since what is shitty music and what is good is very subjective, maybe this will help: He likes the music they write about in Spin that isn't big on Top 40 radio. That's why I'm thinking satellite for him. Right now, I know he likes Interpol, Muse, Beastie Boys, old Beatles stuff. He doesn't listen to sports broadcasts. As for talk, he listens to NPR and also the right wing shit like O'Reilly Factor that's on AM. Which is best for that kind of taste? XM or sirius? I just wanna get the receiver I guess, because he has an audio system in his car already.

i dont think you'll have any problems with reception with any of them.......could be wrong though.

i know xm radio has a lot of talk stations along with stand up comedy.

I have XM in my company truck and couldn't live without it. You can get the XM Roady in a package that includes everything you need from power supply to antenna for just over $100. The Roady2 has a built in FM modulator that makes it pretty much a 2 minute install job that you could do yourself no problem. I recommend XM to everyone for the following reasons:

-superior sound quality (every car audio mag agrees)
                    -100% commercial free music
-huge selection and variety from talk and sports to playboy and classical
-much better business model and growth potential
-over twice the subscriber base of any other satellite radio service
-better quality and selection of supported hardware

If you have any other questions look around on the XM site and go to the XM radio fan forum. They are very helpful and have a great online store.

Here's a pic of my XM Roady self install in the company truck. Gives you some idea of the size. The remote in the bottom of the pic is an extra $20 but worth every penny. With over 200 channels you know a guy has to surf. LOL

That is why XM is better IMO. If you want to hear popular music just listen to the radio.

Ok, so XM then. I'm looking at the site but don't get the difference between the roady and the skyfi.

I guess I want to get the best quality unit for the car. Suggestions?

The Roady is smaller and newer, has brighter display and more options. The Skyfi is bigger ans has been around longer. It used to be that only the Skyfi could be used with a boombox in your house. But now they have also made a small personal stereo that you just plug the Roady into. So with either one you can take it out of your car and into the house if you want. The best thing about the Roady is it's size, features and it comes as a complete ready to go kit. You get the tuner, antenna, power plug, cassette adapter etc.... With the Skyfi you just get the tuner and have to buy everything else depending on how you want to use it.
