  • Deathbed confession: Woman killed husband, hid body for years

    By Associated Press, 11/18/2004 23:57

SOMERVILLE, Mass. (AP) A deathbed murder confession from a Massachusetts woman led to the discovery of her husband's remains Thursday inside a freezer, where his body has been for up to 14 years, authorities said.

A woman identified in media reports as Geraldine DiMarzio Kelley, who died of cancer last Friday at age 54, told her daughter that she killed husband John Kelley while the couple lived in California.

Authorities did not release the names.

The daughter told police, who went to the Planet Self Storage facility in Somerville on Thursday and found the remains inside an unplugged freezer that was locked and sealed with duct tape, Coakley said. There was an odor coming from the freezer, she said.

''There was an indication made that the mother in fact had committed a homicide and the father's remains had been sealed in a freezer, a locked freezer, which had been shipped to (the storage facility),'' Middlesex District Attorney Martha Coakley said. ''It's very bizarre.''

The woman shipped the freezer, with her husband's body inside, from California to Somerville six years ago when she moved back to Massachusetts, Coakley said.

But the slaying may have taken place up to 14 years ago. That's when the woman apparently began telling her children that their father had been killed in a car accident, according to Coakley and Tami DiMarzio, the woman's sister.

''She told me he took off in the car and last she heard he had an accident, that he was hit by a truck or something. It was in Nevada,'' Tami DiMarzio told WBZ-TV.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause and approximate time of death.

''She believes she was a victim of domestic violence,'' Coakley said. ''Whether that is accurate, we just have no idea at this time.''

Ventura, Calif. police said they've been contacted by Massachusetts investigators about assisting with the investigation.

Well.....what can they do to her now? NOTHING! But you know she had to go through those years looking over her shoulder wondering if the body had been discovered!

Whatever happened to just leaving a SOB? If he abused her she should have left the next day, not stayed around and took it until she snapped and whacked him. If I stayed with a nagging bitch for 20 years till she drove me crazy and I killed her nobody would say she had it coming.

I am not saying that killing someone is the answer, but there are a lot of women who are in abusive relationships because they are threatened with being killed if they leave. I have a family member whose husband beats her, and he has told numerous people that if she ever leaves him, he will kill her, her kids, and her grandkids-what is anyone supposed to do about that? Her family can't even help her out- one of us could take her in, but eventually he would find her- they have children together, and those kids will want to stay in touch with Mom and Dad. If she ever 'snaps' and kills him, I will be behind her 100%. I wish life were so simple that all people who are abused- men and women- could just walk away.

ha, if a female in my family was being abused by her husband, I would be the one to kill that piece of trash.

GurllieGurl- I don't know what you mean by that. Do you mean how could a man abuse his wife and not heed the sanctimony of marriage? Or how could a wife kill a husband who has been beating her?
On that note, how do people abuse children and animals, far more precious and innocent than any two people that are married- no offense to the precious and innocent ones who are married, but I think you know what I mean! An awful lot of fucked up things happen in this world.
