Good luck man. Here is some advice thrown around a poker forum i frequent:
#1. Stay calm.
Way too many guys get caught up and stop thinking. Sometimes is panick from losing, others it's over confidense. If you are not calm, players will read you and you'll always bet like an idiot too.
#2. Don't over bluff.
Maybe it's because these kids watched too many Poker movies or Moneymaker get lucky, but I always see kids try to over bluff as if that will win them the pot each time. Yeah you gotta bluff SOMETIMEs just to keep people on their toes. Aside from the "buy the pot" situation, bluffing is like throwing curve balls. Your only doing it to keep everyone else off balance.
#3. Always think of risk vs reward.
#4. Don't let past hands effect you.
I seems to always see new people go crazy wild after losing a few hands. It's like they have to double up. That or the oppsite where they get all scared and get the shit bluffed out of them. Look at each hand like it's your first one at the table. The only thinks you need to remember is how players acted in previous hands, that's it.
dont play inside straight draws!
dont play shitty hands. if you are playing shit hands for the sake of playing and you have the patience of a 5 year old, get up from teh table and bang your fucking head against hte wall a few times. if you still feel like being a jackass, rinse and repeat.
fact of hte matter is poker is all about patience. if you were patient enough you could probably beat anyone. thats a fact. but everyone wants action so they do dumber things. sure its not that simple but its rather true. if you wait until you got real solid cards and fold hands you can see losing somewhat easy then your game will go up much higher than playing like a fool.
The number one thing is they play too many hands. Without a doubt, this is the biggest problem for them.
know the art of slow play. They get excited and raise too often, and lose more than they had to lose. If you play with them long enough and hang on to your hand, you kill 'em
Rookies always have too much faith in aces. They bet like mad when they get an ace and it's flopped.
Odds for a pair of aces winning goes down with the turn card and the river. They bet like hell, not reading other players at all, who are sitting with two pairs.
You get nice pots by defeating a pair of aces !!!!!!!!!!!
Rookies, and quite a few experienced players, play way too many hands and stay with them way too long. That's why they lose money.
yeah I think not slowplaying and not hanging in there when they have a decent chance at landing a good hand are two common mistakes
still think its all about patience... knowing what to fold (low kickers), play strong (high pairs and high suited connectors), limp in (high cards, suits, high connectors)... and when to just outright fucking push in big and intimidate to win a pot
Good Luck. Chances are now a days in these tourneys, YOU ARE BETTER THAN 95% of the players there.
