I know what you mean.
During the first Gulf War my father hung his 20’ X 38’ Garrison flag on the garage door. Someone took it in the middle of the night.
The worst part of the whole thing was the flag was given to my father's uncle after 28 years in the Marines. He gave it to my father when he got out of boot camp. My Father planned on giving it to me and having it passed on as family heirloom but because of some fuck head thief it's gone.

Mate, I think the point of them is that they raise money for whatever cause, the money doesn't just go into the manufacturers pockets.....

How do we even know that the money from the sale of that stuff even goes to support the troops? How much goes to who? I think that someone just makes the things and then says something that isn't true- playing on our good nature- for the purpose of making a buck. Remember all of those 9/11 shirts that were supposed to aid the victims' families? Not much of that money ever made it to those that really needed it.

If we want to support our troops, we can donate to a local school that's sending gift boxes to the troops for Christmas or make time to visit a VA medical center and donate some time or money to show our appreciation for their efforts. That is my plan for this holiday season.

Primal Instinct - I guess if you were that concerned about whether the money goes to the cause itself, you would do some background research as to whether the company manufacturing the items is a registered charity and how long they've been operating, their track record etc. They usually have to declare exactly what money they obtain and where it goes, lots of charities get closed here because of fraudulent activity. Seems like a lot of work just to purchase a small ribbon, but I guess if somebody has lots of free time.....

I bought a magnetic ribbon and tried to put it on my Honda Accord. Half of the damn car is made of plastic...had to put it on the side of the car by the gas cap.

That's why I mentioned alternatives in my post. I looked at these ribbons and stickers and thought about this subject. Mostly, these ribbons and stickers are in supermarkets at the checkout counter aka the impulse buy section of the store. Lots of times, these products don't even have a description or identification about the manufacturer just a paper backing. So the supermarkets buy them from some local distributor and just throw them on the shelves for purchase. It's not like it's a food product or medicine, so they could care less of it's origin or if the manufacture actually donates money from the sale.


Who actually is supposed to benefit from these sales anyhow? Not that there is all that much money after production and shipping costs but from all I can see, it is not a financial benefit (although many people believe that) but a purely visual bandwagon sort of thing. I'm not dissing people for buying them because I'm glad that they have the troops in their thoughts and prayers. I just happen to think that we could show them support in a way that directly benefits the troops overseas and here at home.
