Like House1 said, I'm a vet of the boards even though i don't post much. I believe Dan Duchaine is the definition f what you call Guru!

On a serious note, I think that alot of it is knowledge. But, knowledge doesn't always come from books, it comes from experience too. Not being araid to try new things or even lose alittle trying something off the wall, even if it sounds good on paper.

I think the whole guru/vet thing gets way overblown in netland.

For proof of this look at what has happened in the past when some of the so-called guru's on training/drugs/nutrition have been outed and it being found out that they werent exactly what they said they were ie hiding behind the computer syndrome. A good example is people who would post pics of themselves which turned out to be someone else.

Kinda makes me always think of the movie 'Waynes World " with the "handsome Dan" DJ Episode.

I think no matter who you look up to/admire always do your own homework and "caveat empeor" as well

Veteran; [n] an experienced person; someone who has given long service

Now there are plenty of people on this board who are Vets. They have been around, read a lot, tried a lot, and experienced first hand the sport we all love here. This does not mean that they believe in the right or correct way of doing things. Like many of you posted already it depends on their research that they have performed to support their claims. Not many Vets. do this. They simply call you a dumbass and tell you to use the search function. They have no want or desire to impart information to people with questions. This will keep them from ever becoming a Guru.

Guru; n] a recognized leader in some field or of some movement; "a guru of Body Building”

Now the word leader defines Guru.
Leader; [n] a person who rules or guides or inspires others.

The Guru of our sport loves it and wants other people to love it. This means that they teach compassionately and are not prone to short, one shot, totally unsubstainsiated comments.
They never belittle someone for not knowing something. They have a open mind when they can afford it and stand firm on the facts when needed.

One would never travel to the “Guru on High”, for months on end to have him tell you “Dumbass use the search function."

                          Just my opinion.
