Scientists have said the magnitude of the quake that created the tsunami was equal to one million atomic bombs (like we used on Japan) going off simultaneously. The world should be thankful it happend underwater!

I don't see how it could have been much worse. The death toll from just the waves will end up around 500,000 and then disease will kill another 500,000 or more. We are looking at the very real possibility of MILLIONS of people dying from this!

I didn't think about that. It's tragic any way you look at it.

This is incredible. People just stood there as the waves were coming in. I guess it was impossible to imagine the magnitude of what was about to happen.

With no warning system in place, those poor people had no idea what was happening...it really is a shame

many people went out to survey the damage afterwards and were then hit by the subsequent waves. something similar happened (although on a much smaller scale) when the last significant quake hit in San Francisco, people were wondering why the shore water suddenly dropped and were walking around where the water used to be. A geologist there witnessed this, knew what it was, warned everyone he could and got the hell out of the way. in their case there was no huge return of water though.
i cannot simply attribute it to peoples curiosity that people would head out there after the first wave either, many were immediately overcome by grief knowing their family and loved ones were probably swept away in the first wave, and went out looking for them.
