National Smiley Face made by pipe bombs

This may be an old to story to alot but I just read about it. My girlfriend is studying her human geography book and it talked about this story. A guy tried to make a giant smiley face that could be seen from the sky with pipe bombs.

I thought it would be pretty funny to see if it was some how desigend to just make scortch marks in open fields.
