i've learned & practiced a lot of the techniques while studying a variety of different martial arts, but haven't ever exclusively studied judo or gone through any belt-system for it. i've studied plenty of jujitsu, and even some really off-kilter and hard to find forms though.
gotta love the head-ache you get after being thrown around for two hours though... and it's truly amazing to learn muscle and strength can sometimes mean jack-shit when facing someone who truly understands the principles of leverage and form

Not judo, but I study Taekwondo. Very different fighting forms, but I enjoy the kicking and the added flexibility of taekwondo and karate forms. Judo would definitely be better in something like Ultimate Fighting. A friend of mine studies Aikido-that's pretty cool for practical self-defense as well.

Are competing in forms or sparring? What belt are you and what federation are you in?Originally posted by spidey
I am competing tomorrow in a Tae Kwon Do tournament in Jacksonville, NC.
This will be my first so wish me luck, LOL.
I'm considering doing a tournament soon too cause I whoop on everybody at my dojang, but I think it's cause they're afraid of me. I'm taller and more muscular than any of them so they're convinced I'm gonna whoop them even though I just started in December!

I am for sure competing in forms and I may fight. I don't really know yet. I am unsure of the rules (this being my first tourney) so I didn't want to give the kwanjanim a definite answer. He is bringing the pads and I will look at the situation when I get there and make my mind up then. He said I could register for the fights any time after I got there.Originally posted by BBAddict

I just started at this school in November but I have an edge over most of the other students of my rank because I took a couple Japanese styles 20 yrs ago and already had good form coming in. Like riding a bike :D.
You know, I don't even know what federation my school is with. I guess I should know that eh, LOL. I am a green belt BTW. Kwanjanim let me skip yellow since I knew all the greenbelt material and had good form. In truth, I could have tested for blue. He didn't have the greens do anything testing for blue that I could not have done and I know the blue pumseh as well as half the red belt pumseh (Ojong). Oh well, I guess I should be happy he let me skip yellow, LOL.
Actually, I took taekwondo 20 yrs ago too and earned my yellow then so I wasn't really skipping any belts.Last edited by spidey; 02-18-05, 06:44 PM.

That's awesome that you're getting back into it. I never did it as a kid so it's a whole new thing for me, but I have the reflexes and instincts that a lot of kids don't seem to have.
We do point sparring so I'm not sure if I'll spar in the next tournament I could go to cause it's Olympic style-very different. I'm only a yellow belt so I'm not very far along yet. Just working on the first chong bong and taeguk forms now but I really enjoy the sparring more than the forms.
Good luck in your tournament. Maybe we'll spar someday in a tournament and not even know it!

I got back into it for something to do with my son. He is 4 yrs old and still not coordinated enough to play ball and he doesn't have the attention span required for fishing yet either so I got him started in taekwando and started taking the classes with him for fun. He already has his yellow belt and is enjoying himself.
It will teach him self dicipline as well as coordination, balance, and self confidence. I predict he won't have NEARLY as many fights in school as I did, LOL.

What happened to orange belt? You skip that too? Also I like teakwondo but the onlything I dont like is the fact that they make you black belt so fast. I mean within a year or year and a half you can become a black belt. Depending on who is your sensey. For someone in Judo it would take anywhere between 5-10yrs b4 you become black belt 1st dan. You have to learn Japanease in order to advance from belt to belt. But either way, good luck bro and I think you need to spar or as they say in Japan Yrondory.
