Report: Vikings agree to trade Moss to Raiders

The Raiders have a new misfit to add to their legacy for harboring the league's malcontents.

Randy Moss, who had a tenuous seven-year career with the Vikings, has been traded to the Raiders in exchange for linebacker Napoleon Harris, the Raiders' 2004 first-round pick (seventh overall) and a 2005 late-round pick, the St. Paul Pioneer Press has reported.
Trades can be worked out although not announced until next month

"Nothing is official until March 2," Dante DiTrapano, Moss' agent, told the Pioneer Press. "But don't be surprised if Randy Moss is wearing the Silver and Black this upcoming season."

Despite repeated denials since the end of a wild 2004 season for Moss and the Vikings, team officials have only indicated that they've had discussions with the Raiders.

The Raiders will assume Moss' $7.25 million base salary for next season while the Vikings get a cap savings of almost $2 million. Four seasons remain on Moss' eight-year, $75 million contract.

This upcoming draft will mark the third time in the last four years that the Vikings have held the seventh overall selection. In 2002, the Vikings selected offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie. In 2003, the team botched its pick, wound up with the ninth selection and took Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kevin Williams.

The Vikings also have the 18th pick in the 2005 draft.

Acquiring Harris fills a key hole for the Vikings, who are desperate to solify one of the league's most inconsistent defenses.

The Raiders now may have one of the most fearsome receiving duos in the NFL, and Moss could thrive in coach Norv Turner's vertical passing game. Pairing Moss with Jerry Porter — who agreed to a five-year deal worth close to $20 million with the team on Tuesday — will give the Raiders two big, talented targets for quarterback Kerry Collins.

Quarterback Kerry Collins called for the Raiders to re-sign Porter late in the season, saying it was one of the most important decisions the team had to make

Minnesota will receive Harris, draft picks

      ESPN.com news services
The agent for Minnesota Vikings star Randy Moss said the team has agreed to trade the prolific, controversial receiver to the Oakland Raiders.

"There was discussions between the Minnesota Vikings and Oakland Raiders the past few days, and they've come to an agreement on Randy playing for Oakland next year," agent Dante DiTrapano told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The deal cannot become official until March 2, the start of the NFL's fiscal year.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press, which first reported the deal on its Web site, said the Vikings agreed to send Moss to Oakland in exchange for starting linebacker Napoleon Harris, the seventh overall pick and a late-round pick in the upcoming draft.

DiTrapano said he didn't know the terms of the agreement.

The Vikings wouldn't confirm a deal.

"We have had discussions with the Oakland Raiders, but there's nothing to announce," Rob Brzezinski, the Vikings' vice president of football operations, told the AP.

Raiders spokesman Mike Taylor said he couldn't comment on the trade reports, but "this organization has always been tremendously aggressive, and Randy Moss ranks with the great players of all-time."

Asked what assurance there was that the trade would be finalized, DiTrapano said: "It's just like any other contract. There's a meeting of the minds between the people who negotiate for the Vikings and the people who negotiate for the Raiders. It just hasn't been reduced to writing and it won't be until March 2."

Moss trade rumors, which initially arose a year ago, have been flying around the league for the last month. For the first time in his seven-year career, Moss was sidelined by an injury -- a partially torn right hamstring that essentially cost him five games.

He still wound up with 13 touchdowns but caused a ruckus by walking off the field with two seconds left in the regular season-ending loss to Washington. The next week in the playoffs at Green Bay, Moss drew a $10,000 fine from the league for pantomiming a moon at the Packers' crowd.

Team leaders Matt Birk and Daunte Culpepper confronted Moss after the Washington incident, and the organization's patience with him has seemed to dwindle in the past year or so.

"He's my good friend, but you almost get to thinking that maybe enough is enough," Culpepper said earlier this month at the Pro Bowl. "And maybe the Vikings organization has had enough."

It's a dangerous proposition to deal a player with the talent Moss has. Though San Francisco netted far less for trading Terrell Owens than the Vikings will reportedly receive for Moss, the 49ers went 2-14 without their star receiver and Owens went to the Super Bowl with Philadelphia.

Once Moss leaves Minnesota, the Vikings' top receiver will be Nate Burleson. Former Steeler Plaxico Burress is the cream of the free-agent crop, but the Vikings could also snare a potential salary-cap casualty such as Isaac Bruce, Muhsin Muhammad or Derrick Mason. The draft also has two promising players -- Michigan's Braylon Edwards and USC's Mike Williams.

DiTrapano said Moss was "very pleased to be going to Oakland and looking forward to playing with a team that's promised they're going to throw the ball deep a whole lot to him and having a chance at winning the Super Bowl."

"He doesn't leave Minnesota with any grudges," DiTrapano said. "It just was frustrating for him to lose."

The Raiders will take on Moss' $7.25 million base salary for next season, while the Vikings will save nearly $2 million against their cap. Four seasons remain on Moss' eight-year $75 million
