That of course, is just a part of the dark side. Nonetheless, pits have been responsible for the majority of the "unprovoked" attacks that I have dealt with in the last 2+ decades. You're a smart guy. Don't let it happen to your family. Trainers are great. Obedience school is great. Keeping the dog seperate from the baby is great. None of it will have made a hill of beans difference in the end if god forbid something bad happens. Not trying to scare ya or piss you off. It's just that it happens way to damn often and it was almost always avoidable.
i call bullshit bro some were you can look up bite stats and i think german sheaperds were #1 pittbull attacks just get all the news reports. and if a dog is raised right your kids are safe as can be. pittbulls are dog aggresive not people aggresive (like i said if trained right)

My parents live on 10 acres, so other dogs aren't that close.

A good training program will help a lot. I have BullMastiffs and always train them, a little training goes a long way. The trainer I use specializes in helping owners with pitbulls that "Go Bad". The key is to always train in a group of other dogs so that you dog learns to listen to you while there are other distractions. Over the last 2 months a friend of mine has re-train her pitbull who got off track. Her son starting playing with the pit by rolling him on his back and this is a natural fighting instinct in pits they if they start to roll or are on their something kicks in and they want to fight. This dog is now very well trained and has no problems around other dogs. He is actually winning agility contest now.

            GET THE TRAINER

We took our dog to obediance school and trained with her for weeks. My wife and I practice these habits on a daily basis. To this day, she still sits and waits for us to put the food into her bowl, and until we tell her she can eat. Also, we leash her often enough to keep her used to the leash, but when we let her off the leash, she will only run in a 20-30 foot radius from us. I can even get her to sit on the street corner to wait for cars, walk across the street, and then tel her to come over to me.

Dogs are like children. They listen best when you follow through, end on a good note and you are consistant with them. I must say though, Pits are generally VERY energetic dogs and takes a little more patience than a Shepard, Collie, Doberman or any other dog that has been bred to help humans. Our dog is a Shepard/Dobie mix.

If you have to, take your dog back to school. Yes, you can teach an old dog new tricks, it just takes a little longer. Be patient when working with him and use the few tips I said above.

Did you know that Dactsuns (sp) were bred to go down into holes and bring out badgers? My brother in law had to give his away because it was mean with the kids. They are more likely to harm children than a pit will.

A dog is a dog is a dog! I don't buy into the fact that some dogs are more prone to viciousness than others. I think that a mis-treated dog of any breed can be made to be vicious, because they basically hate humans, because a human, (or humans), treated them badly for long periods of time. I do agree, however, that some dogs ARE much more hyper and active, and probably need a bit more discliplined training. Compare a Jack Russell to a Blood Hound for example. A Jack R wil run and jump all day and night if you let it, whereas a blood hound will lounge around most of the time. Mean dogs and mean people are exactly the same. Most of that "mean" behaviour comes from their environment. Of course, there are people, and probably some dogs, that have some mental problems due to brain disorders, etc. BB

sorry to have mispoken- I don't think pitbulls are meaner than other dogs; but I think they are powerful and capable of doing some serious damage to a small kid. didn't know weener dogs were mean either-my bad I reckon how about a goldfish?

They were bread for going down in holes, but PB's are definitely more likey to hurt someone. There are facts on that.

As of March 1, 2005 the attorney general of Ontario has banned buying & breading pitbulls because of so many maulings and some deaths to people, anyone who CURRENTLY owns a pitbull has to register it and have mouth guard on it when walking it in public also you're liable criminally if the dog harms anyone. Looking at shotz avatar reminds me that a dog is like a loaded gun bro, it can go off at anytime, and who can pinpoint a cause?

You know what? there's too many "Jazzkiller" type hoodlem's buying pitbull's for the wrong reason and that's why this shit happens!

Your Dog sounds pretty aggressive bro, I take it "he" means it is a male dog? if it's not neutred also could have a small role in it's aggression and energy. The PITBULL needs obedience training bro. I use to work with dogs in security and when they're trained right they're excellent companions!

I saw a documentary on the world's most aggressive dog's. You know what? I take my hat off to the AKEETA, that's a dog I want also the Italian terrier will literally die for it's owner putting it's life on the line to protect you!

I've heard of people who preach on beating and practically starving a dog by feeding it every few days to make it more aggressive and that is totally wrong

And by the way we all know who JAZZKILLER was:druggie:
