I decided that these tips are big enough to share with all of you. My PC generally takes about 3 minutes + to boot and runs a bit slow at times, but after doing some of these things, booting was decreased to almost 1 minute and things run smoother. One of these tips I got from PC world magazine, so just in case you think I am some nerd that is giving bad advice, this one is very effective.
Cutting back on autoload programs-
Select-Start*Run
Type-msconfig and press Ok
Click the Start Up tab
Uncheck programs that you don't want to autoload. If you don't use Microsoft Messegner, that is a good one to get rid of, which is labeled as msmsgs. Others I unchecked were AOL IM, MSN IM, Limewire and a couple others.
Remember that unchecking your Virus protection or other protective programs (firewall) will cause you do have to turn them on every time you boot and forgetting can cause real problems.
Another tip to getting your PC running good is to uninstall programs that you no longer use. Go into your control panel, Add or Remove Programs and uninstal them from there. Some programs will actually need deleted after this process, some will not.
I am sure all of you are aware of getting rid of spyware and making sure you are clean with viruses, but some forget to make sure they are defragmenting. Before you do that though, I would recommend that you go through your files and make sure that your PC hasn't been making doubles of certain files, which can take up alot of space. If you don't have a window cleaner already, here is a good site to go to. http://ccleaner.com/
Lastly, make sure your drivers are all up to date. If your PC is running well, there is really no reason to do this. But if you're having some trouble, then you might need to. To check on these, Right click on MY Computer, select Properties, clecik Hardware and then Device manager. Yellow question mark means it's using a generic driver instead of one that was designed for it, a red exclamation means it is not functioning. Double click on the one that you want to select, then choose update driver.
hope this helps!!
