thats a good thing i joined the gym. Before here at home i was going heavy but with no one to spot me. This made me only do 4-5 reps. On the gym with the same weight or more i can do rorced reps with someone spotting me. Its just scary once u cannot bring the weight up.

Asphyxiation was the cause of death. So, to answer your question, yes, his death could have been prevented with someone there. It depends on what arythmia he had. I am assuming it wasn't one that put him into cardiac arrest or that would have been cause of death.Originally posted by Bdubb
He had a heart condition and things went wrong when he was lifting so I would question if he had the ability to do anything at all to prevent himself from letting the bar roll back.
There are so many arythmias and only a couple are deadly in the first couple minutes. A trip to the hospital would have had him back to normal in no time.

I bought easy collars for the bar before I started lifting, but I reallized it had some safety implications so I have never collared when benching so I didn't pin myself. I of course use them for squatting and other stuff though. That's a real shame-probably not what he was going for. :(
