  • Victim of credit fraud!!!

I was checking my account on online today and noticed a charge for $9.95 for MSN Online services! Never signed up for that shit! There was a 1-800 # next to it so I called them. They said I had signed up in January for a premium service and that the billing cycle had just started....$9.95/month. I told them there was no way in hell I signed up for it. I gave them my info and they wanted to know what my email addy was...when I told them they said that, that wasn't it. I said...NO SHIT! Anyway...they are cutting the service off and supposedly crediting my account for 9.95.

How the fuck did someone get my info? Shit I do on the net is through a secured server...I thought , anyway!

Anyone ever had this happen to them?

There is really no such thing as "secure" on the internet. More like server A is more secure than server B, but it is all relative. There is always going to be someone somewhere that will find a way around the "security."

I would immediately put a fraud alert on the CC (in this case im sure the CC company is watching) and all of your other cards. Terminate the CC and get a new CC - dont keep the same card. Also I strongly recommend getting a copy of your credit report.

Pick a CC company that doesnt hold you liable. Its not a bad idea to get a CC with a very small limit $400 just for online purchases. Keep in mind someone stole from you...so file a police report! At least on larger claims.

For stolen Identitly (or prevention) take it further call ALL you CC companys and terminate the CCs and get a new CCs.
Call the 3 major Credit Bureau's (Xperian, Equafax, Transunion) and put a fraud alert on your credit. This will prevent anyone from making transactions without your consent (the Bureaus's will explain in more details). Plus get a copy of your credit report and review it for stuff you didnt purchase. File a police report (helps if it gets ugly and they start buying cars in your name).

This happens all the time. I know there are means to retrieve this info be it a trojan horse virus, hijacked server, whatever... its on the rise so watch out!

Ask your bank about the disposable CC's to use for online purchases. You can put a certain small amount on them and not have to worry about losing your ass if someone tries to get you with fraud.

For all you know, it could have been some waiter from a restaurant that wrote down your cc number or maybe your financial info was stolen from ChoicePoint, Inc. that happened a few months ago. Check out who holds your info and backtrack from there.

They had my first and last name along with my card number...so I doubt it was a type-o!

This is my check/visa card through my bank. I keep just enough on there for small purchases. I would have to transfer money from my savings account for larger purchases. Either way...I'm cancelling this one and getting another.
