  • So I got a text message from my daughter...

Last week, just as I got to work I got the following text message from my daughter:

"Mom there is a free rat at school and I really want one and normally they're like 60 bucks and I really want a rat. Can we PLEAE take her? PLEASE!!!"

Well, I wondered what kind of rat costs $60 but that was for the cage, toys, etc. There were a few more msg's exchanged and it was made clear that this rat would be gone by the end of the day (my salvation). I was busy since I was at work and I told her to ask Stromba. She said that if I asked him the chances of him saying yes are better. LOL I explained one last time that I was at work and busy so if she wanted this rat she'd have to go through her father.

I knew he'd say no and so did she, so she didn't bother to ask him. I had shown him her msg. because it was funny and he said "Our house is a RAT FREE ZONE!" Over the weekend she told him about it and he said, no rats.

Well, Sunday comes along and my aunt and my mom come over. My aunt is teaching me how to make her authentic rice and beans and pork roast so mom takes my daughter out to go shopping. Mom asked if they could go to Petsmart and I said yes but they are NOT to bring any pets home. So, they leave to go shopping, my aunt and I make a run to the supermarket, get home and start cooking. I realize I left my cell phone upstairs and when I check it I've got 4 missed calls and a couple of messages from my daughter. Apparently my daughter didn't hear me tell my mom not to come home with any pets (gotta love the selective hearings kids always have).

She wound up calling Stromba and he gave approval for her to get a mouse! There was a slight lack of communication because she comes home with TWO MICE! She's thrilled and has a big fish tank to keep them in (less likely for them to escape from that vs. a cage) and all kinds of toys for the little creatures. They're both female so no chance of suddenly finding more mice.

One mouse is hyperactive and she puts it in a ball and it rolls around the floor. It's comical when the two mice are on the wheel together, the hyperactive one runs quickly while the other one just holds on for dear life and gets spun around, upsided down, over and over again.

See what joy a few small rodents can bring to our lives :)

Unless they jump out of the trash can at 5am before I have time to get my coffee!!!

At least you didn't get a Kangaroo rat. Those suckers can really jump. It makes for an interesting morning when it fakes you out and takes off down the hall. LOL.

We already had a scare and thought one got out. The look on Stromba's face was none too happy. We found her though, she was hiding under the food tray.

Hope these little white mice don't learn to jump. One freaked me out and crawled from my hand, up my arm and was heading for my hair.

 Do you have "big hair"? Would the mouse have gotten lost in it?

IMO, you would have been better off with the rat. The pet rats you buy are usually tamer than mice. Mice can get nasty very quickly and bite hard. Rats on the ther hand are much more tame. Not to mention, they are much larger and if they get loose, they are easier to find.

My kids can't go into Petsmart without asking for some assorted rodent. After several hamsters, gerbils, etc., I just tell them "remember the last one."

They get the message now. :)

Sorry girl, I missed the thread somehow and got to it late.

My little sis has 3 rats and my little bro keeps a bunch of breeder mice to feed pinkies to his lizards. The mice are just plain nasty little things, but the rats are cool. The rats get a little hyper sometimes, but like to be held and love attention. They are very social.

                            Thanks for the insight.

I would have preferred something more cuddly. My neighbor and brother-in-law both have guinnea pigs and they're sweet. When my daughter was on the phone with Stromba, he asked her if she'd rather have a guinnea pig but she said she wanted the mice, so there we have it. Kids!
