  • Weight Training and Jogging/Running?

I am 20 years old. 5'11" I weight 155lbs. My body type is athletic, im kinda cut. I want to gain muscle mass throughtout my entire body. I also want to cut up my 6 pack more, especially those stubburn bottom two.

I was recently told that if i want to gain weight, i shouldnt be running or sweating too much and should just concentrate on eating a lot (eggs/protein), and lifting. He said when you run it you burn the calories that your muscles need and you wont gain. is this true?

I want my daily workout to consist of jogging a mile or two. Lifting for an hour and a half. and every other day either, running up stairs or workin out abs. I plan on taking supplements like cell-tech/nitro tech, and pumptech.

Does my workout regimen seem good? anyone have suggestions? should i be running? or is there a optimal or bad time to run? perhaps running right after my lifting workout is bad?

If you want to put on mass, I would advise against running on a continuing basis.

Running will absolutely make your legs shrink

are you serious? i dont just want mass. i want muscle mass.

i figure when your run, u build up your leg muscles and the only way they may seem to look thinner is because you loose fat.

i want them to look like they do now when they are flexed. and maybe even a little more bulgy which would come from more muscle.

can anyone second this philosophy of his, cuz i don't understand it. How do soccer players have crazy strong and big legs? thats what i want. i dont want the cross country runner legs. so i almost see what your saying. but i figure if i lift with my legs thats how that wont happen.

      second and third opinions, please!

Running is very catabolic. Too much cardio releases cortisol which will then cause your body to start to break it's own muscle down for energy. RS knows what she's talking about dude, you should see her pics.

I understand you want muscle mass. What other mass would I be referring to? Again, you're using your leg muscles for strenuous cardio. Therefore leading to muscle breakdown. If you must do cardio, do an elliptical trainer, or walk.

DO NOT RUN if you want to build MUSCLE mass

What ever happen to breaking down fat for energy? or what if i consume enough food that the energy can come from there?

if this is true, then how do i got about achieving my desired results? should i spend more time in the gym and do light weight lifting after im done with my regular routine and just do lots and lots of reps?

so are you guys telling me its impossible to get really muscular and have great lungs and abs at the same time?

i started joggin a mile or two a day, which i didnt think was a lot and couldn't effect my muscle gains, mainly because i was told that in order to have great abs, one needed to both do crunches/situps and all that as well as cardio. so how can i get great toned abs and a muscular yet cut body?

Just a reminder: i am 5'11", 155-160lbs, i dont want to get huge or anything. Def. not more than 200lbs, just 185 would be ideal.

well, i should probably say jog. because im defenitly not running during the mile or two i run. its a paced jog, rather slow especially since if i jog fast i just get too tired and cant last the whole way. i was hoping that after a while tho, this would improve.

the eliptical trainer in the gym does not help my lungs at all. i can feel it. i can really be on that thing for like an hour or 2.

is the bike the same thing as the eliptical trainer, or are the bikes like running? either way, i can ride them bikes for an hour two.

but now that i think of it, i do get sweaty. it dont feel like a great workout, but is that all i need in order to get my abs toned up? cuz like i said, the main reason i jog is for the abs. the other is for lungs, so when i play basketball i can play multiple games and not be tired.

!st off your only 20 so your own metabolism alone is burning off mass by itself. At your hight and WT. it is unlikely you have much fat to burn. 2nd you have to understand that fitness and bodybuilding is a way of life and it takes years to build a muscular body. Its is not going to happen in 3 months or a year or even 2. If it were that simple everyone would look fantastic. It also takes time to learn your own body and what is gona work for you as every person is different.

i did that mistake when i was in high school. I was running shitloads , playing basketball for 4 hours straight and weight training. I was eating alot but not the right foods until my junior year. There still i was running/jogging alot and playing ball. I would always wondered why i never gained a pound of muscle. Until i stopped jogging and bball, i started gaining muscle. I wasnt letting my body grow by doing all that stuff.
