How much sleep do we really need anyway? I know the average is 8 hours a night, but it seems like I need at least 10 to function on a daily basis and sometimes 12. That only leaves me with half a day left! Does it vary from person to person or do some people really need to sleep for half the day in order to function properly?

i need at least 7-8 good hours of rest. If i get less than 7 i feel like shit, my head hurts, im fatiged, and feel all tired, but if i go over 8 hours, my head feels heavy, im all lazt throughout the day, and not to mention, i got less time to do things. Forme 7-8 hours is perfect.

Your body needs a certain amount of sleep to recover, particularly if you're training hard. A lot of bodybuilders nap during the day and sleep at night. For me, if I'm training particularly hard I may need 9-10hrs a day. Under normal training conditions, 8hrs is sufficient.

My father used to tell me that over and over when I was a kid. It does not work for me.Originally posted by sekcbeast
I think that it varies from person to person. I also think that you can train yourself to function with a certain amount. Your body adapts.
8 hours=fine
7 hours=little cranky
6 hours or less=basket case

The most important thing to me and I have tested it a lot is that you should wake up at the end of a sleep cycle. Each cycle lasts about 1 and 1/2 hours. That is the time you enter stage 1 sleep to the end of a REM cycle....and then it repeats. You should try and achieve a sleep schedule where you wake up on a multiple of 1.5 So either 6, 7.5, or 9. is a good place. myself I find the more I sleep the sleepier I get. I like 6 hours. So if I go to bed at 10-11 then I get up around 430 or 5.

My sleep varries from about 4 to 10 hrs. It's really weird. I'll go through periods of insomnia, then I'll have a few days in a row where I need more sleep.
I usually average about 6 hrs., falling asleep between 1 and 2 am and waking at 7 to 8am. During that 6 hrs. I wake up several times through the night. I also have mild sleep apnea and the sleep I get's not very restful. I must be like my dad. My father rarely got more than 4 hrs. of sleep a night and he was fine with that. He used to say that life is too short to spend it sleeping and he'd sleep when he was dead. I am very tired when I wake up in the morning, but I'm fine during the day and at night. I have tried to take a nap duing the day and normally can't unless I'm sick so I guess I'm getting enough sleep for me.

I started testing my sleep cycles in high school because I was always feeling tired getting 6-8 hours of sleep. I tried getting 8 hours of sleep for a while, then 6-7 for a while and then trying 9-10...The only way I felt recharged was when I got a minimun of 9 hours of sleep. Sometimes I would need 12 to feel good throughout the day if I was stressed, but usually 9-10 was sufficient. Do you think this is something serious?

I seem to sleep and be pretty well rested if I have 12 hours of rest. Then sometimes I sleep just 8 hours and feel just fine. I don't think 12 is normal. Sometimes I just get up so danged early on the weekend that I have to catch up on my sleep.
