  • Safety Warning:

We had 4 drowning deaths in the Houston area over the Memorial Day weekend. ALL of them were children between 2 and 8 years of age. Don't let this happen to yours this summer. :nono:

PLEASE, KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE KIDS

it only takes a moment, if you have a pool or pond, invest in a cover or barrier. and invest in swim lessons for your children. i was resuscitated as a child after near-drowning, and the recovery process is hellish. if you're out on a boat or in the river, wear a friggin life jacket, it know it gives you a funny tan line but i've done search & rescue for bodies in water with visibility of 2 feet, and there's no way anyone'll find your body before it's too late if it's on the bottom. as muscularly dense people (hopefully...) we would almost all sink under ordinary conditions. and watch your alcohol consumption around water. one of the first things coroners often do on male victims is look at the clothing. believe it or not a huge amount of drowned males are found w/ their zippers down, from peeing in the water, losing their balance or control, and ending up in the water. almost all drownings are PREVENTABLE

I nearly drowned on a whitewater rafting trip once (wearing a life vest) and it is not a pleasant way to exit this world. Good points from all here. This might sound funny but kids are like puppies in the sense that you need to set up physical barriers to slow them down from injuring or getting themselves killed. Some areas (like near water or open windows) can be a one-shot deal and it doesn't take much attention lapse to screw up. I think this is why parents seem to "age" so fast because a few years of constant alertness and pressure can wear on one, lol.
