  • Shoule I have called the cops on this drunk diver last night?

There are these kids staying in my hotel last night (maybe 19-21 years old at the oldest, for contract work). They came in here about 4:30 in the morning drunk looking for directions to a country club to find there friend who was swimming with a couple women. My first thought was that I have been there and I'm still not perfect. But I kept thinking about what if my girlfriend and baby were out there on the roads also? They weren't of course but if those guys got into an accident with some other mother and baby, I would feel horrible, since I could have stopped it. I guess I kept feeling guilty for getting someone in trouble for making the same mistakes I did. Now that I type this thought and get my thoughts out, I know next time I won't hesitate to call. To much risk for everyone and even thought I was lucky enough to never get in trouble all the times I made the same mistake. I was even luckier to never have hurt anyone and not everyone can be that lucky.

call them a cab? I am not sure if that was an option or not depending on the situation.

I thought about that for a second. Probably should have suggested it. But it's just one of those things when dealing with that age it will just go in one ear and out the other. Then when they refused and I did call the cops, I'm sure they would assume that I (the hotel) told on them. I'm not sure how the managers would like or dislike that. I will definately hae to ask the manager to see how they would like me to handle it in the future.

There's really no options there cause you're right-they wouldn't listen to any suggestions from you. I think calling the cops was almost the only real choice. I saw a show on TV where this guy drives around catching drunk drivers and then places them under citizens arrest until the cops get there. Have any handcuffs with you at the hotel?!

Thats a tough call. On one hand, you dont want to feel like a rat. But on the other, like you said, what would happen if they got in an accident and killed someone. I dont know what I would have done.

Here's your other option....if they are staying at your hotel you tell them that they are too drunk to drive and they need to go to their room and sleep it off and that their friend will be alright with out them. If they insist on going then you tell them that you know the make and model of the car along with their license plate and that you will call the cops on them if they leave. You have given them the choice and they know your intentions before they walk out the door!

Since I was a member of a DWI jury yesterday, I have a couple of questions. Were they stumbling? Did they have bloodshot eyes?

Yea, that most definitely should've warranted a call to the police.

There have been medical studies done about youth and risk taking. It was found that the decision making process area of the brain is the last portion to develop in humans. This particular area of the brain usually matured around age 23 or so. This is the primary reason that young people (especially males) take foolish and often life threatening chances much more often than adults. They just think differently in the literal sense. This poor decision making/risk taking does not limit their behavior to just their own welfare but also that of others who may interact on some level with these people. Driving much too fast or erradically on public roads, drinking and driving or drinking and attempting to perform tasks requiring manual dexterity, fighting, extreme sports, and other stuff like that are normally attributed to youthful indiscretion but now at least we understand WHY they are lacking what others attribute as "common sense." This is one of the primary reasons for higher insurance premiums for young drivers.

damn kids. Its a tough one here, i wouldnt know whether to call the cops or just le tthem go. But when i give it though its hard cause your right what if they get into an accident not only for others people saftey but for thiers too. Watching the TV the next day local news and the reporters talking about a accident some drunk kids had.

Ive seen alot of little farts here like that, think their all cool cause they drink and show off. But i know cops are always patroling the streets.

i would've called the cops. yeah, i've made mistakes, but at this point in my life i wouldn't hold it against anyone who'd done it to me.
you only have to see the effects of these accidents once. i know we all see news reports and all, but run on a rescue squad for a little while, at least until you see someone's facial imprint in a windshield because of a drunk driver.
i know it would feel self-righteous to make that decision for someone, especially if you're not perfect yourself. but some people out there would give everything they own to have had someone do that before their loved ones were killed. ...end rant...
