  • Just got the bill from the ER......

And the total came to $5300.00 bwahahah!!

All they did was take some blood and urine samples and did a scan.
Good thing I have Health Insurance. I would be pissed if I didnt.

It's insane. The hospital charges you like $6 for a Tylenol and you know they get the stuff at deep discounts. I know they have to cover the costs of nurses, electric, etc., but they just rape ya every time you go in. My insurance company is always saying that my hospital bills are "above and beyond reasonable allowances" and I'm left to fight or foot the bill.

When I had to go to the ER last month they admitted me and I was in for three days for the pancreatitis and gall bladder removal. The grand total is.........$31,000! That includes the surgery, scans, hospital stay etc... The portion we are responsible for is only about $1,100. Thank God for insurance indeed.

radiology is where they get ya. Usually it's $2000-3000 just for a CT or MRI.

The funny thing is when you insurance comp has to pay it, they have the bill audited, and dropped down to a state regulated fee. I have seen $5,000 bill dropped to $1,000. Hospitals rape you plain and simple, but I guess they have that power when your life is on the line.

That's happened to me many times. I recently had a bill for about 7k that got dropped to just over 3k.

I got a statement from the hospital a while back showing what the charges were from my kidney stone and the 2 visits I made in a day.....almost $10,000! It only cost me $200 because of the $100 ER fee.

People don't realize that the charge amounts are meaningless because...
                          a) insurance companies negotiate these down contractually on average at least 50% so they don't pay those crazy prices either, and
                          b) if you don't have insurance, hospitals/docs will still haggle and deep discount for you (I was a collector for a hospital in college). If you just tell them you want to pay, but you can only afford 1/2 the bill and you'll pay it off in X payments, they work with you.

So the $10 band-aid and $35 syringe are scary on the initial bill, but nobody should ever feel they gotta pay that.
