although i love football, it is only considered popular in the states, where as hockey is worldwide...North America, Europe, Asia and even Australia has started to push the sport.
Hockey is a game for gladiators, involving wooden stickes, razor sharp blades, a rubber disc that can travel 100mph.
fights are common, and respected among players, staff and fans.........c'mon, who dosn't like to watch two heavyweights square off at center ice, because 1 guy took a cheap shot or ran the goalie of the opposing team.....this is the reapect factor, you will not find this in other sports to this degree.

in the palyoffs for football, it takes 1 game to win, therefore creating no real big rivalries, some bad luck/call and your team is done for.
in hockey, during the playoffs, you play the same team every 2 days until someone wins, creating great rivalries.

it takes 28 wins max. to win the stanley cup, these guys look like they are comin back from war with their black and blue eyes, stiches everywhere, casts on limbs.........you know they forgot the feelin of pain, and are playin with their hearts on there sleaves.

    fastest game on earth

oh yeah, Jesus was a hockey player, God was his coach...........
there is more excitement in a NFL preseason game then in every hockey game ever played. :breakit:

      You're drunk. :drunk:

Before anyone gets carried away on this thread, I think that you'd have to have played both games to have your opinion carry much weight.

AHEM...I happen to have played both. And while it's a little like comparing apples to oranges, I give hockey the edge because of the speed. Hockey is a lot faster than it looks when you're just a spectator...you'd have to have played the game to fully appreciate that.

Well my man, you might find this hard to believe but I have played both also. Played foot ball in high school and gave hockey a shot for 2 years also. Hockey just dosent compare to football bro. I think a big difference here is the culture. In america bro, football is god of sports, we live for it, we love it. In canada, its hockey.

I have tried to like hockey, tried to watch it on TV, I just cant force myself to like it. I dont know what it is but I cant stand it. It seem alot of others here feel the same way so I know im not just making this shit up.

Bouncer...I can understand what you're saying. But if you only played hockey two years, you certainly didn't play it at a high level to where you can really appreciate the game. Many more of us in Canada have played hockey for a significant number of years, so that's why so many of us love it most likely.

Some sports you just have to have played to appreciate watching: I know I can't stand soccer...I detest it to say the least. Yet, most of the globe is crazy about the game. I never played soccer, so that probably factors in to why I can't appreciate it. I know that I didn't care for watching golf on TV until after I started to play the game...only then could I appreciate just how amazing some of the shots the pros hit really are.

I think that football is easier for someone who has never played to get into than hockey is. The production is much slicker, the size of the players is captivating, and the commentators/announcers do a much better job of breaking down the strategies being employed on the field than hockey announcers and commentators usually do.

Well I never played either and love footbal. What does that say? :) I did grow up in Texas where football is god so that may have had something to do with it.

Hitman I know what you are saying about soccer. I am one of the few people I have ever known that like to watch it. I played for 14 years, so like you said, there are things they do that just seem like any other play, that I see the difficutly in. But football is still my favorite thing to watch.

I never really played football at a high level either though. Granted I was good in high school but I didnt go any further then that.

i have never been in the Olypics but i love watching that. i have never swam with sharks but i love watching shows about that. i have never been a sprinter but i think those guys are just unbelievable.

i dont think it has anything to do with if you have done these things or not. its a simple matter of if you find a sport boring or not. i find hockey boring. to be honest, i have played golf maybe twice and i totally suck ass, granted i havent played since i was 10 lol. but the fact remains, i watched the US open and actually enjoyed it.

i think i just busted a friggen blood vessel in my forehead readin that post :megaphone
                    grrrrrrrrrrrrr!

the following post is from one of the greatest combacks in sports history........and i was there.

                    1997
                    Edmonton Oilers vs Dallas Stars
                    Game 3
                    First Round Stanely Cup Finals

The Dallas Stars was the leagues defensive powerhouse, the epitome of a fine tuned machine with coach Hitchcock at the helamn (sp?), a Stanely Cup favorite.
The Edmonton Oilers, were the leagues biggest underdogs, who could not keep pace with the top dogs, due to an extremely low budget. They just barely made it into the playoffs, finishing in 8th. They didn't have the high caliber players the Stars had, but the did have the heart, grit, and determination that is necessary to succeed in the playoffs. Low, a former goalie for the Oi,l was their coach.

There was 4:00 left in the game, the Stars were abusing the Oilers the entire game, leading 4-1. Dallas's goaltender, Belfour a future hall of famer, was execellent when he had to be, but otherwise a pretty quite night for him.
17 000 fans, either pissed off or depressed as this game was in Edmonton.

So with 4:00 to go, there's a faceoff in Dallas's zone
                    puck drops
we win the faceoff, puck goes to the point.........there's a shot.....WE SCORE

the crowd still wasn't feelin, why would we, to score 2 more goals against a defensive jugguarnaut with a future hall of famer with less than 4:00 to play.......let's get real.

                    1:45 seconds
there's a fight for the puck in Dallas's zone, it squirts free, a blind shot from the high slot............WE SCORE
Thats when the colisium erupted like a volcano, and we started to believe.
45secs left we pull the goalie, Kelly Buchberger comes flyin down the right side..........rips a shot........HE SCORES

i cannot even begin to describe the atomesphere inside the builiding other than surreal.
                    We go into Sudden Death
                    10:00 left in the period
                    there's a shot from the point...........loose puck..........where the fuck is it........Greir has it.....taps it.........IT"S IN
                    HOLY MOTHER OF GOD.
                    beer goes everywhere.
this was the most physical and exciting series in the playoffs that year........with 3 games goin to SD, we win the series in game7 in SD.
these 2 teams have met in the playoffs the last 3 of 4 years.........creating an extremely bitter and hateful relationship between the 2.

i also left out the mind boggling saves that Cujo, our goaltender, made, he truly was heroic that night.

i bet you live on the East coast, and watch East coast teams.
East and West play 2 diffrent styles of hockey
East play the trap (which is boring as hell)
                      West play more wide open

watch a team like Edmonton, Vancouver, Detroit, Calgary (just because they like to hit) to fully appreciate the game
