Anti-lock brakes just keep the driver from locking up the brakes/wheels by pulsing the brake pressure at a very high frequency. However, a fast change in velocity can still cause the car to slide, despite the fact that the wheels aren't locked up. Anti-lock helps but it isn't perfect.

Why did she have to slam on her breaks? Did someone pull in front of her or was she just not paying attention?

Yes someone pulled out in front of her she was going about 45mph and had to slam on the brakes and slamed right into the guy. She broke her foot and has some burns from the seatbelt and airbags and the car we think is gone the frame is bent and the outside is trashed. but she is ok other then the foot Thank god i had the kids with me. I was lke 15 mins behind her.

You can feel the anti loack brakes kick in. It vibrates really hard on your foot when it kicks in. Alot of times, the tires will lock up for a second until the ABS kicks in though. If it was very close, then it may not have had time.

One of the very reasons why I hate ABS. They say it's only there so that you can steer while you're braking. But if you need to break on a dime, you don't have time to waste pumping the damn break.

she was going 45mph, you said the guy pulled out in front of her so I assume he was at least moving, she had time to slide 30 feet once she hit her breaks and she still hit the guy? Not only did she hit the other car after sliding 30 feet but she hit it so hard that she bent the frame and broke her foot.

i dunno bro, im sorry that she got in an accident but you might want to ask her how it all went down again. i have a hard time believing that if she was only going 45mph and she was atleast 30 feet behind the guy that pulled out in front of her that she couldnt stop.

I dont want to offend you because I have no idea what happened but from what you have said, this is what I think. I think she was driving down the road, going about 50-60 mph, a guy pulled in front of her a good distance in front of her and he was going about 20-30, she was looking out the window or doing something that she didnt have her eyes on the road at the time when he pulled in front of her. by the time she looked up, she was almost on top of him so she slammed on her breaks and WAM it was too late.

thats my take going by what you have said.

You're right there Bouncer. When I had an accident years ago I was doing about the same speed and about the same distance and I only crinkled the hood and messed up the radiator cause I got under the person in front. And I would have missed her but I was looking out the window to try and change lanes.

Well i should have explained it alittle better my fault she was heading down the road and he was coming from a side road. She said he pulled out and sat there for a minute and that is when she slammed in to him. she hit is driver side front and rear door so it was kinda like hitting a wall and it was at an intersection. I have asked her over and over what happened and she tells me the same thing everytime. the one thing i am not sure about is the speed and the distance she slid it maybe around 20-30 i am going to check it out this week and measure it. and as for her speed she is not one to go very fast maybe like 5 miles over the speed limit which would put her at 50 mph and him sitting in the intersection.
