  • Acid Reflux, anyone?

Does anyone here suffer from acid reflux? I think that I'm having a case of it today and it's a painful sensation that I've never experienced before. It almost feels like a cross between a heart attack (never had one though!) and a torn pectorial muscle. I've found that it hurts the slower and deeper that I breathe. I was talking to my dad a few minutes ago and he said that it could very well be some small gas pockets trapped in my chest and a tablet such as Rolaids or Tums might relieve the pain. Does this ring a bell with anyone here?

    Thanks,
    David

Acid reflux dosent feel like a torn pec or a heart attack at all. Its more of a "burning burpy uncomfortable" feeling in the throat, not in the chest. I dont mean to scare you but you might want to have that checked out.

My girlfriend has it, she was diagonsed with at 18 and they wanted to put a tube in her esophagus, however she does take nexium which she thinks is the best medicine for that disease. But you should get checked to be sure you have acid reflux.

i get it alot. Spicy foods, alcohol, Mcdonalds. It is a bitch to sleep with too. If it keeps happening go see the doc. I also take nexium. It usually does a real good job of making it go away for a while.

Ive tried not eating stuff like that, but after having it here at home just there, i get those cravings. Ive been noticing also when the foods are cooked, depends how they are cooked and with what. The worst for me is Pizza Hut, I get the worst heartburn ever, feel like if im dying.

I suffer from GERD...gastro esaphegeal reflux disease. It is pretty much a chronic acid reflux. As you know, I am a paramedic, but, my first episode of having it very bad, I almost called 911. I thought I was having a heart attack. I broke out into a sweat, had severe chest pain, pain went into my jaw (classic cardiac sign). I ended up taking 15 tums and 2 pepcid and it did not even begin to help with the pain. The thing that finally told me that it wasn't cardiac was that moving around helped and laying down made it worse. I ended up taking 2 percocet to make the pain go away.

Determing whether you have a peptic ulcer or acid reflux is generally a matter of a quick clinical eval.

Peptic ulcer: Bloody stools (dark red blood, also not always an early sign), food makes it feel better.
Acid reflux: Water makes it feel better, food makes it worse, can have excessive burping but not always.

Taking an antacid will help balance the acidity of the stomach. if pain is controled, then the acid reflux is controled and you don't need to worry about esaphegus damage. If pain is not aleviated from antacids, that means the stomach is going into over drive and compensating for the antacids, the result is making more acid, which will lead to more severe episodes.

This is where a proton pump inhibitor is needed. This actually slows the production of acids. Nexium and Prilosec OTC are examples of this. Prilosec OTC can obviously be bought over the counter, Nexium is by script only. Hopefully Nexium will become OTC in the next few years, as it is a pretty safe drug and this will make the cost go down for people who do not have insurance.

                    Hope this helps.

Well folks, I went to the doctor today and I was incredibly wrong. What I have is some torn cartliage in my rib cage, causing a burning sensation in my chest. I am a gymnist and I spend a lot of time suspending myself in the air when doing my ring routines. I guess something gave a little bit and caused a rib or two to stretch away from my rib cage. Last night was horrible because I couldn't sleep an ounce due to all of the pain. It felt as if I was having nonstop charlie horses in my chest, so I had to break down and visit the doctor today. I was prescribed a few weeks of anti-inflammatories and with some rest, I should be fine in about a month. Thanks for your responses!

Yeah, it will also do a good job at eating a hole in your stomach over time. Just clean up the diet a little and take digestive enzymes.

Shibb, have you ever thought of taking a good digestive enzyme that has the necessary lactase enzymes that your body is not producing to break down the lactose sugars in milk? I'll bet you will have good results and may be able to take in some dairy products.

yea, but it's not worth it to me to keep taking them. I can live without the dairy stuff.
