  • Computer question

I have a new PC here at work. I was downloading a program and rather than paying 400$ to register it, I went the cheap way and started downloading crack to get it to work. Somewhere in the process I got some shitty spyware or a virus. My IE will not do a google search. You can type in something like Angelina Jolie and it will show 4 million hits, but it does not show the links. I downloaded Mozilla firefox and it does the same. I put on PestPatrol and NOD32 virus and got everything off, but somehow the damage has been done. I can use a search engine like altavista.com and it will work okay, but not google. I use google a lot at work and this is bothering me. I tried to do a system restore before I screwed it up and it woudlnt work. I tried changing all the settings in IE back to default and no luck. Anyone got any ideas on how to get my google back to googling?????? Thanks

Run a virus scan, run a spyware remover (spybot, ad-aware pro). If worse comes to worse save all your files and reformat.

      noob -jk

Download AVG's free Antivirus. Run update, then a full scan.
      http://free.grisoft.com/doc/Get+AVG+FREE/lng/us/tpl/v5 (at the bottom)

Download MS antispyware. Run update, then a full scan.

      Will also fix IE.
      Done. (both free) :druggie:

Awesome, downloaded both and they fixed my problems. I highly suggest them to all. The Microsoft antispyware is the shit!!!

Sounds like you got some sort of browser hijack that has google as one of it's targets.
Spybot, Adaware, Microsoft AntiSpyware, those are all good. CWShredder has some uses too, for hijacks that is.

          EDIT: I just remembered.
There's also a free virus scanner from Trend Micro that runs through the browser. If you go to the website and look around you will find it, it's called Housecall. It runs off of Active-X, so if you use Firefox it would be better to use the UK version, which runs off of java. Here's the link for the java version:
          http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/cons...all_launch.php

I use it all the time, and it's found viruses and even let me remove them. Best part is, it doesn't stay resident in memory, so it doesn't clog up your computer's resources.
