can you tell me how they are as a pet -- we have been searching for a dog for awhile now --- i had a rottie some years ago and someone stole her from me when we lived in a small city -

i live just outside of that place now but have my own home and enough room for a dog - after my rottie was stolen i had vowed to never get another pet again - its very heartbreaking to lose a pet they are family - my wife and my kids have been on me to get another dog my youngest was not born yet but my oldest remembers sabrina -- keeps her picture

i have been to the local dog shelters, kennels ,etc, etc -- was going to get a lab as one of the guys i work with breeds them - but my wife loves and so do i the boxers -

    so a few questions -

    how are they to housebreak?
    how are they with kids?
how are they in general temperment wise -- i can read a hundred things about them online but hearing from people that i am a little closer to is better to give me a better overall picture -

    thanks in advance

My boy took about a month and he never peed in the house again. He was a real quick learner for a little puppy. my boxer loves kids but he gets so excited and he is so strong that he can hurt them if i dont hold him back. he wont hurt them on purpose but he will knock them down and lick them. in the process they can get hurt. there temperment is great. he loves everyone except for when he is inside the house. if he sees someone outside that shouldnt be there or hears a weird noise he will go nuts. good protector and watch dog.

hope that helps. of cource i cant speak for all boxers, i can only speak for mine.

one thing i will add is, they can be a littel agressive with other dogs, he plays very rough and tries to pin them down, if they fight back he goes nuts and there is a fight. he is ok as long as they dont fight back. lol

in generel though, he is a great dog and i love the breed,

My boxer also took about a month to housebreak and never went in the house again.

He is also great with kids. My niece just turned 3 and he could not be better around her. She uses him as a jungle gym and he just sits there and licks here.

Just like Bouncer said, my boxer loves people unless they are outside the house and he does not know them. Then he goes nuts! I think the UPS guy is scared to come to my house anymore. :D

He is not good with other dogs. Or any animal. He got bit by a German Shepard when he was a puppy and ever since then he has never liked other animals.

He is a great dog and most boxer owners that I talk to say the same about theirs. He’s my boy we do everything together!

Hope I was able to help. Let us know if you get one!

The_Jarhead (he's on vacation so I'll put my 2 cents in here) had a femal boxer who I adored. Very obedient and well trained, great with people and kids but did not get along with other dogs (he had to get rid of another dog to keep her). After she passed he got a new boxer puppy. He is learning to be potty trained but since he doesn't bark to be let out they had to bell train him (he rings a bell by the door to go out). He's still young and even when he's been at my house he's been doing very good with the potty thing...a couple of accidents but not much, very good IMO considering he was not at home. So far he seems to be listening very well and getting along with other animals, but my cat doesn't play nice with dogs and is probably gonna traumatize the pup.

From what I can see as the friend of people who've had boxers, I like the breed a lot, just gotta be careful if you want to have another dog around.
