Poor dog. He had to keep attacking again and again to get that many quills though; not very smart.

I guess the vet had to put him out to pull all those things out. They are barbed and don't come out easily. You usually have to use pliars. I hope he didn't get them in his eyes. I couldn't tell from the picture.

I bet the porcupine walked away from that. WHen the dog attacked, the porcupine either slapped him in the face with his tail or just balled up and let the dog go face into the quills. The instinctual reaction of the dog would be to recoil in pain and surprise before attacking again (and again, and again...). The quills are long enough that the dogs teeth may not have even reached the porcupine and the more the dog attacked, the more quills got stuck in his muzzle which would act as a further buffer to keep the dog's teeth away from the porcupine. Try this: hold a pencil in your teeth tightly and try to reach a wall with your teeth.

Let's hope that none punctured an eye and the dog will still see and not have any respiratory problems or, not to mention, is still alive.

That is disturbing to look at, but damn, the dog just didn't get the hint.
