I agree to that! Cause I sure as hell don't party anymore since I've been engaged. Not saying I regret, infact I don't miss partying at all. But I will say one thing ever since I've been engaged it seems I can't stay as lean. I think I've gotten comfortable and I know I'm not needing to look good for anyone else cause she loves me no matter what. So therefore I eat more junk. lol Not like I go out and eat junk food purposely because of it though.

That's the best advice I've seen here. A 1 ct. or slightly larger stone is absolutely fine for size and should not cost more than about $3500 for a good quality stone. Do some research and take the trip to NY. Keep the setting fairly simple and let the diamond show itself off. Then the two of you can work on picking out wedding bands together.

Congradulations on asking her to be your wife. Stromba and I are married almost 21 yrs and regardless of what people say, married life can be fantastic! He proposed to me again last year right before our anniversary and we renewed our vows. Marriage is fantastic when you're with the right partner.

I'm sorry, but 900/ct is gonna get you a shit stone. It will be full of inclusions and awful color.

Take a look at a recent Rapaport sheet and tell me you know better.

I hate to see people get ripped off with diamonds. Here's a screen shot (down below) of a decent place to learn a bit about stones...it's from www.diamondhelpers.com .

The cut of the diamond will varry. A round will show the most brilliance but most women these days prefer a princess cut stone (a bit less expensive for the buyer, but more sought after by women). J color is fine, unless you're a diamond expert you're not going to see any problems with this. VS1 clarity is fine as well, unless you're looking under magnification, you really won't see any distracting problems.

Of course you can spend less (I sold a guy an engagement ring last week for a few hundered dollars but he's a war vet and that was his limit, a little tiny diamond, good quality though, just enough to do the formalities to the woman he's loved for years) and get something with pleanty of inclusions and color and poorly cut, or you can do the right thing and get a nice stone, reasonably priced (by taking that trip to NY unless you have a friend in the wholesale end of the business), and presenting your girl with a good diamond that you didn't spend way too much for.

Regardless of the hype, diamonds are not a good investment. The wholesale on them is about 1/4-1/3 of retail. Do not be fooled.

Diamonds at a ct. or above jump in price as compared to a stone below 1ct. Take a good look at the differences, you may be able to satisfy her with .95ct and spend significantly less than if you got her 1.05ct.

Personally, I like smaller diamonds and my husband knows this. We've sold larger stones, 3ct+ and I just look at them and think GAUDY! My diamond solataires (I have round and princess cut diamonds) are all .75 ct. or less. I just don't like big stones for daily wear. Most women that I've dealt with have that 1ct number stuck in their heads but if you showed them a .90 or a 1.10 they wouldn't know the difference.

the best thing me and my wife found was a no interest deal on a store card. plus everything was a third off when we shopped so we got the engagment ring (1.5 carats), he wedding ring (1 carat) and my ring all for the original price of just the engagment ring. so I payed it off in a few months but there was no interest on the card. we saved a ton of money.
