I have never been into politics. Do describe why in short, it easly gets on my nerves. Recently I have been watching his show on HBO and the way he expresses his views, I can really relate with and enjoy. I don't know what most dislike about him, but he has made me more interested in what's going on in our country and around the world. What "reporters" per say do you like to pay attention to and why? Not so much why to get into a particular subject, but more of an overview. Now most of you will be reading this while I am asleep. So if you could keep it very broad so that I have a thread to come back to and ask more questions, I would appreciate it. I'm just looking for more alternatives to start paying more attention to what's going on. I'm not looking for members to critisize each other on who they like. Just a simple why you like them yourself. I hope that is enough explanation to keep this thread away from a debate or a VERY light one, just to give different points of view.

I know what your saying about the news and such and your right. but i have learned more from the history channel, NGC, discovery, discovery international, and so on then i ever did from school.Originally posted by stonecold54some of what he says makes sense the other half doesn't, lol. I don't watch TV or read newspapers with the intention of ever learning anything because for the most part you won't. some of the biggest morons alive are now what passes for "information" on TV.

I am with the big guy on this one. I love the History Channel/Discovery/NCG/ and all the spin offs. There is so much you can learn by watching the shows they have on there. Want to figure out how to work on a car? Its on there. Want to understand the political environment of Tikrit? Its on there.
However, to get back to the topic, yeah, I kind of like Bill Mahr. I have no idea what his qualifications are; and how educated he is, but he makes some solid points from time to time. He seems a bit snide, which pisses me off, but I genrerally agree with him.
I like Chris Matthews better though, he is more of a hard hitter (imo).

i like bill maher, and another person i like to watch who alot of people seem to despise is bill o'reilly
i don't always agree with both of them, but i do agree with alot of what both of them say.....they both bring up interesting current events...I don't have HBO so i haven't seen Bill Maher's new show but I did watch politically incorrect when it was on abc or nbc, and I liked how it always had 5 people with 5 different points of view
and the best thing with both maher and o'reilly is when someone is just ridiculously biased, they pound them with question after question trying to crack them....i love seeing them talk to a civil rights activist who feel like the entire country is out to get them

I am a fan of Thomas L. Friedman. He is a 3 time Pulitzer Prize winner and his twice-weekly column (found in the New York Times) is syndicated in more than 700 newspapers worldwide. He typically leans left but here recently he has leaned right while still maintaining as much of an unbiased view as possible. He's quite articulate on his points of view but unlike Maher, O'Reilly and so on - he manages to tell the whole story without making everything so damn one-sided. He will keep you intrigued if you are really looking for an extremely intelligent point of view.Originally posted by ShibbyWhat "reporters" per say do you like to pay attention to and why? I can't say that I "REALLY" like either Bill Maher or Bill O'Reilly but they do make some really good points. I will also have to go with B on the fact that there is more to learn from other areas of information but if you want to learn about politics all you have to do is study history. Our current politicians are the best at making the EXACT same mistakes as others in the past. Politics recycle trends in how they prosper or screw-up etc. Studying history allows you to see the mistakes our current day events are about to unfold into.Originally posted by ShibbyI'm just looking for more alternatives to start paying more attention to what's going on.

Agreed. Tom Friedman is extremely intelligent and articulate, and he is an expert on the Middle East. His book "From Beirut to Jerusalem" is required reading for anyone interested in the 20th century history of the Middle East and Israeli-Arab relations.Originally posted by fog_hat1981I am a fan of Thomas L. The problem I have with folks like O'Reilly is that they are more interested in browbeating their guests who have viewpoints contrary to theirs, talking over them and not allowing them to finish articulating their thoughts. It makes for good theater but not for a useful exchange of views in my opinion.Originally posted by ShibbyI just watched the O'reilly Factor and liked it. Thanks.

I'll tell you who I just watched tonight, who annoys the shit out of me... Greta Van Susteren
I don't know enough about the news to know how she differs from the rest, but she does annoy me and is the image of news that I had, that kept me from paying attention to it.

I don't know how she got the job with FOX.Originally posted by ShibbyI'll tell you who I just watched tonight, who annoys the shit out of me... Greta Van Susteren.
For years, Greta van Susteren was CNN's inhouse Scientologist and legal talker and co-hosted the show Burden of Proof until December 2001, when the show was cancelled and her co-host Roger Cossack fired. She then hosted The Point with Greta Van Susteren, a news and analysis show, until the end of 2001, when she resigned and signed up at FOXnews. At the end of January 2002, she had cosmetic surgery, which is why people nicknamed her Greta van Surgery. The "new, improved" FOXNews Greta looks quite different from the old "no frills" CNN Greta. (Gretta info)
I enjoy O'Reilly even when I don't agree with him. My daughter likes his show and she read his book "The O'Reilly Factor For Kids." Shibby, you might enjoy visiting his website, http://www.billoreilly.com/.
