  • He actually did it.

Well I didn't think he was going to actually do it, but it looks like Arnold is more of a do'er than I thought. I wish the rest of the states would follow in these footsteps.

Calif. Gov. Signs Ban on School Junk Food

    SACRAMENTO, Calif

The food served in California schools will be healthier starting next fall under legislation signed Thursday by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The new laws impose a campus ban on the sale of sodas, set a new nutritional standard for vending-machine snacks, and require more fruits and vegetables in meal planning.

The former bodybuilding champion and fitness expert said the new rules are all part of a new effort to fight childhood obesity.

"California is facing an obesity epidemic," Schwarzenegger said at a conference on childhood obesity. "And more and more, children are becoming part of the problem."

Lawmakers made California the first state in the nation to ban the sale of soft drinks in middle and elementary schools two years ago. One of the bills signed by the governor Thursday will expand that ban to include high schools.

Beginning next July, students will be allowed to buy only water, milk, and some fruit and sport drinks that have limited sweeteners.

The governor also signed a bill that will raise nutritional standards for foods sold in school vending machines and regulate the number of calories that can come from fat and sugar. It also takes effect next July.

Another bill provides $18.2 million during this fiscal year to offer more fruits and vegetables in school meal programs.

The California bills set a new standard nationally for healthy school foods, according to the Washington D.C.-based Center for Science in the Public Interest.

"Coke, Pepsi and other junk-food marketers enjoy being in schools because they know it is one of the only places they can target kids without parental interference," said Margo Wootan, the center's nutritional policy director said in a statement.

"But in California, parents have clearly had enough, and leaders of both parties took notice," she said.

Susan Neely, president of the American Beverage Association, called the ban on sodas "unnecessary" and said that students and parents would have been better served by a voluntary program.

"We believe this complex problem would be more effectively addressed by educating students on the importance of living a balanced lifestyle," Neely said in a statement.

She doesn't mean freedom to choose something other than soda. She wants the students to have the freedom to choose the products that are going to benefit her the most. She doesn't really care at all about actual "freedom". It's a shame that anyone is upset over kids being given a chance to live healthy lives starting with what they eat. It's even worse that they're upset because they're the ones who are selling this crap to the kids in the first place. Almost as bad as McDonalds making millions upon millions selling food that's going to kill people. Parents can't exactly monitor what they're kids are buying and/or eating at school and you can't expect that the kids are going to be able to resist buying soda and chips when it's so readily available to them.

We couldnt have cokes or candy in my school either. That was in the 80s/90s. I did eat pizza and fries every day in the lunchroom though.

Yea, I guess I took that a little far. She just annoyed me. It's been there choice on what to eat all along. If that's not a voluntary program I don't know what is.

It's about time this was done!

Kids don't know how to eat because their parents don't know what's right and hell, even the government's food pyramid should be done better.

                  WTG, Arnold! :bravonew:

I agree! In a way, it's like smoking. Kids can't smoke in school nor should they be allowed to. However, after school and off of its property, they can do what they like as far as the school is concerned. That is the extent of the school's authority. People will always endeavor to participate in beaviors that are detrimental to their health. They drink too much alcohol. They smoke cigarettes. They engage in unprotected sex. They eat lots of junk food. Although these behaviors are not allowed in government controlled areas of their lives, they are still free as private citizens to engage in these behaviors in the privacy of their own homes or in some cases, in public.

Too many kids are fat these days. Like Puddles stated, they don't know how to eat healthy, especially if their parents don't know either. Kids will just grow up eating whatever they ate as kids because generally, they just never learned proper nutrition. Television also influences their eating choices heavily. You could probably sell pure lard to these people if the marketing was soundly put together and it had a McDonald's M or a crown on it. Just compare todays kids (and adults) from the US to those of other nations. We have the absolute fattest asses on the planet. Soda and fast food ingestion along with physical inactivity is the main reason and could be prevented and/or reversed.

Props to Arnold for doing the right thing, as this might not be as popular a move politically as it might appear at first glance. Eliminating Coke, Pepsi, Hostess ect. is going to eliminate a revenue stream for schools, meaning taxpayers will have to make up the shortfall.
