It is moving at 9 mph now instead of 13. This means the high pressure system has more time to move east thus causing Rita to track in a more northwesterly direction prior to coming on shore. There is quite a bit of difference between yesterday's and today's path. Yes, somewhere is still going to get pummeled in TX/LA but looking a little better for Houston & Galveston.
Also, a little weakening is expected today and it is now being said that it will most likely come on shore as a Cat. 3 which is in the range of 111 - 130. Hopefully, it'll weaken further and people will still heed the warnings and leave.

To be honest, I would rather see it hit New Orleans again. Now before you jump down my throat, hear me out. Wouldnt it be better to hit a place that has already been thrown in the shitter because of the last hurricane that has to be totally rebuilt anyway? I would rather see that happen then for it to hit a new city and totally destroy that one aswell. Instead of having 2 citys to rebuild, I would rather it just be the one that is already destoyed.

No need to jump down your throat. I was waiting for someone else to say it cause I thought i'd get killed for saying it. It would be better off hitting NO again.Originally posted by THE BOUNCERTo be honest, I would rather see it hit New Orleans again. Now before you jump down my throat, hear me out. NO and most of the surrounding areas are already pretty much emptied out of residents and the damage has already been done there, destroying another city would be worse.
The gov't is worried that the levees have already been compromised and would not fair so well in another storm causing substantially worse flooding keeping the area under water for months to come. I believe the govt's best case scenario is that it hits a less populated coastal area where just a bit inland there are large farms.
What a shame this year's hurricane season has become and the predictions for the next few years are not much different.
They're talking about a possible 50 foot storm surge with this one! That's just insane. I'm at 28' above sea level which is pretty good for FL but with a 50' surge my roof would be under water. I can imagine how frightened these people in the path of Rita are right now, many stuck on the highways. :(

I have already had 5 rooms canceled for tonight because people can't get out of Houston. The owners sister was on the road for 14 hours and never got outside the city. She just turned around and went back home for now. She used 3/4 tank of gas and went some like 20 miles.

i agree with bouncer in this one too.
We got shitloads of people here from the Houston area here in town. We are expecting over 20,000 people for tomorrow and all weekend. I was jammed in traffic for an hour here. Thats a good thing our school here are setting up selters for the people to stay in.
