  • Depo-Provera Birth Control?

I have read the stats on this and how it workd. Who has expierence with this? My girlfriend got it yesterday since it's what she can use while still breast feeding. We still have onther couple weeks before she is ready to start have sex again. It also talks about bone thining. Well she's an athlete so would it help to take calciuma and vitamin D?

One of my ex's had that and she had her period for 6 months straight. She was obviously not pleased...nor was I. But just like AAS or any other drug, everybody reacts differently.

Do some more research on it. I don't have any personal experience with it but on the women's fitness boards there have been a lot of complaints and negative comments about it. I've never seen a woman on the boards recommend it.

Thanks, we will see how it affects her the next couple months and take it from there. I personally don't like the bone thining effect if she is going to be trying to get back into condition soon.

I just remembered, if she's nursing she should still be taking prenatal vitamins which will help with the calcium she needs. :)

When a woman nurses her baby, her body will focus more on making quality milk than the needs of the mother's own body and if there's a shortage in her nutrition, it will be pulled from the reserves in her body. So, yes, make sure she's getting some extra supplementation, particularly in the form of prenatal vitamins.

i just studied a chapter about various contraception but it didn't cover anything regarding the supplementation your wife or gf would need....

i'm sure you've probably read most of what i'm about to list but just in case something wasn't listed i'll let you know the main notes from the Depo-Provera section of the chapter..

            advantages
            no estrogen-related side effects

            disadvantages
no protection for hiv/stds (im sure you dont have to worry about this)
the woman must visit health care facility every 3 months for injection
            menstrual irregularities
after 1 year on depo some women report no menstrual bleeding at all
            weight gain
after she stops use she may have tempororary infertility..up to 12 months
decreased bone density studies have found that bone density rebounds when use of depo-provera stops (what studies?...not sure..)

            effectiveness
perfecut use fail rate is 0.3%

all of the above is from the book core concepts in health by paul m. insel and walton t. roth
