We purchased and set up our Hitachi Ultravision 65" DLP TV, Harmon Kardon 7.1 Receiver, Polk audio speakers and the Polk audio big subwoofer.
We love it all. The house rumbles when we watch movies. Good luck setting it up. I remember that my husband had some technical difficulties until he wired everything with the premium wires, cables and banana clips (connectors).
My mother is suprisingly a huge sound and TV nut. She purchased in the last year a 32" SONY HDTV, Rotel receiver and CD player and some Paradigm speakers. Let me tell you she doesn't shit around. This stuff is sold exclusively at a high end store. I like to go over there on Sundays just to watch the football games and movies are rediculous.
http://www.speakershop.com/ This is where she gets her stuff from. Check it out and see what you like. If you want top notch they have it.
Hey, tonight they start airing the original Cosmos series digitally enhanced or something...starts at 9pm eastern on the science channel. If you've never seen it, you gotta check it out, best PBS series ever. If you've seen it before, the new enhancements should be fantastic! They didn't touch the original dialogue. :)
How much are you willing to spend? I am a bit of a hi-fi afficionado (mostly for classical music, not home theater) and I can tell you that the best hi-fi audio components are made right here in the USA (there are good ones out of Canada and the UK as well). Harman Kardon is a middle-of-the-road hi-fi brand but I would personally stay away from Japanese generics.
Great A/V amps are made by B&K, Krell, etc.
Where do I even get started with speakers? If it were me, I would be looking at Martin Logans - just fabulous and looks like a work of art in your room. Until you have heard electrostatic speakers coupled with a good subwoofer, you have not lived. The sound is so breathtakingly alive, it has to be heard to be believed. Audition one, I guarantee you will be impressed. There are several other great American speaker companies that make fabulous audiophile-quality products for the price - B&W, Vandersteen, Thiel, etc.
My question now is, which reciever for this type of speaker system? I dont want to spend the extra money for the more expensive reciever if the cheaper one will do the job. On the other hand, if the more expensive one will give me better sound I will gladly pay it. Thanks for the help
P.S. I was able to drive down to a local Klipsch retailer and listen and get some info on the different systems.
There is only one main difference between the two receivers. The cheaper is gonna give you 90 watts per channel and the more expensive will give 100 watts. The speakers you are looking at will handle either no problem. The 100 watt one will give you some better sound, but to the normal ear you can't even tell. There are some extra features on the more expensive one, but you probably won't even use them. If you don't feel like spending the extra cash go with the cheaper one.
Oh and can I come live with you for christ sakes? lol

Hey B when it comes to home theather sytems it really dosen't matter as long as you have a half way decent receiver you'll be ok. Same with the speakers unless you have a high end recording studio u can get away with almost any speaker, just get a good subwoofer when it comes to sound coming out of your 5.1 system all five of your speakers are used for mid the high range and any low range like explosions comes out of the subwoofer that is why speakers like bose can have great sound without the big speakers.
