  • Wednesday Playoff Baseball: Boston @ Chicago

BOSTON RED SOX @ CHICAGO WHITE SOX ML -105
Boston (0-1) at Chicago White Sox (1-0) @ 7:00 PM EST.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Boston - David Wells (0-0, 0.00) Chicago - Mark Buehrle (0-0, 0.00)

The Chicago White Sox will attempt to take a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five American League Division Series against the Boston Red Sox when the teams battle Wednesday at U.S. Cellular Field.

In the opener of the set on Tuesday, A.J. Pierzynski belted two home runs, including a three-run shot during a five-run first inning, and three other Chicago players homered as the host White Sox rolled to a 14-2 victory over Boston.

Pierzynski finished 3-for-3 with four runs scored and four RBI, while Scott Podsednik and Juan Uribe each homered and drove in three runs to help the AL Central champion White Sox put the defending World Series champion in an early hole.

Paul Konerko added a home run and two RBI while Jose Contreras put together another strong start for Chicago, which won a home postseason game for the first time since Game 1 of the 1959 World Series.

Chicago's five home runs established a new ALDS record and the White Sox stopped a nine-game playoff losing streak at home.

Contreras (1-0), who entered the playoffs with a career-high eight-game winning streak, allowed just two runs on eight hits over 7 2/3 frames in his first career postseason start. The Cuban righthander, coveted by the Red Sox while a free agent a few years back, struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Three of the White Sox' homers were served up by Boston starter Matt Clement (0-1), who was pounded for eight runs and seven hits while lasting just 3 1/3 innings.

The previous ALDS team record of four home runs in a game was set eight previous times, most recently during the 2002 playoffs by the Yankees, Oakland and the Angels.

David Wells (15-7, 4.45 ERA) will take the mound for the Red Sox on Wednesday. Wells has posted a 10-3 record with a 3.18 ERA in 25 postseason outings. Lifetime in the Division Series, he is 5-1 with a 3.10 ERA in seven starts.

The lefthander went 9-2 with a 3.93 ERA in the second half of the season and enters the playoffs having won his last three decisions.

Mark Buehrle (16-8, 3.12) counters for Chicago. Buehrle, the starter and winner for the AL in this year's All-Star Game, enters the postseason with consecutive strong outings
    .
He went the distance and allowed just one run on four hits in a victory over Minnesota on September 25 and then tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings in a no- decision versus Cleveland five days later.

The lefthander is 10-2 at home this year and 4-2 lifetime versus Boston.

Game 3 of this series is scheduled for Friday at Fenway Park. Freddy Garcia is slated to pitch for the White Sox, while Boston will go with Tim Wakefield.
