  • Wednesday Playoff Baseball: Yankees @ Angels

NEW YORK YANKEES @ LA ANGELS ML -130
NEW YORK Yankees (1-0) @ LA ANGELS (0-1) at 10:00 PM EST.

    Probable Starting Pitchers: NY Yankees - Chien-Ming Wang (0-0, 0.00) LA Angels - John Lackey (0-0, 0.00)

(The New York Yankees will attempt to take a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five American League Division Series against the LA Angels of Anaheim when the teams battle Wednesday at Angel Stadium.

In the opener of the set on Tuesday, Robinson Cano drove in three runs with a double in the first inning and Mike Mussina tossed 5 2/3 shutout innings, as the visiting Yankees defeated the Angels, 4-2.

Jason Giambi went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Yankees, who are coming off their eighth straight AL East title. Derek Jeter and Gary Sheffield each added a pair of hits and a run scored in the win.

Mussina (1-0) surrendered just five hits, while striking out four batters without a walk. There was some question about whether Mussina would be able to make it to this point, as he battled a sore pitching elbow in the second half of the season.

Mariano Rivera picked up the save despite yielding a run in the ninth.

Bengie Molina belted a solo homer for the Angels, who were champions in the AL West.

Bartolo Colon (0-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing four runs and eight hits over seven innings. Colon, who struck out six batters and walked one, won 21 games in the regular season and is one of the leading candidates for the AL Cy Young Award.

Chien-Ming Wang (8-5, 4.02) takes the mound for the Yankees on Wednesday. He allowed three runs or less in seven of his last eight starts and won four of his last six decisions.

The 25-year-old rookie righthander, who has not yet faced the Angels, pitched effective for the most part this year, but did have six walks in a loss to Boston in his final start of the regular season.

John Lackey (14-5, 3.44) gets the call for the Angels. He won his last four decisions of the regular season spanning seven starts and equaled a career- best with his 14 victories.

The righthander went 5-3 at home this season, but is just 3-5 lifetime versus the Yankees.
Lackey was one of the heroes of the 2002 Angels championship team, as he went 2-0 in the playoffs and got the win to close out the World Series.

This series is a rematch of the 2002 ALDS when the Angels shocked the Yankees by knocking them out of the postseason in four games. The Angels went on to win their first-ever World Series title that year.

Game 3 of this series is scheduled for Friday at Yankee Stadium. Randy Johnson is slated to start for the Yankees and he will be opposed by Paul Byrd.
