The disease logic is bullshit.. IMO its your choice to do anything you want so don't blame genetics or any crap like that... how many people have genetic tendencies to drink and don't lots, so lets stop makin excuses for people and call it diseases when its really poor life choices. THis whole post pisses me off, I'm not responding to shit

actually, you can be genetically predisposed to being a drug addict/alcoholic. one example would be someone with a serious anxiety disorder--something like social phobia (and i'm not talking about being shy here, this is a serious psychological disorder). these people would be much more likely to use drugs or alcohol in order to deal with their anxiety in front of others and participate in society. though you could look at this as a matter of willpower--as the ever astute Taylor seems to describe the situation--these types should then be considered at a serious disadvantage in terms of will power abilities as compared to a healthy individual.

that is just one example out of hundreds that could be illustrated.

Modern science and medicine has proven that alcoholism and addiction is a disease, both mental and physical. My posts are factual and based on both research and experience.

alcoholism and addiction has nothing to do with will power.

Why does it disturb you so much? You don't have to apologize for yelling ... you're not bothering me. Yell all you want if it makes you feel better.

re: obesity ... actually, the same underlying causes that result in alcoholism and drug addiction also cause food addiction.

The fact is that this is a disease ... a physical allergy combined with a mental affliction. Addicts and alcoholics don't have a choice.

It is perfectly reasonable for someone without this disease misunderstand the nature, causes, and symptoms. Do a little research, bro.

I will agree that yes there is medical reasons behind peoples addictions, and yes drug addiction is a disease, but that statment is total BS.

People allways have a choice. Ya they may need help. They may need support, but in the end it still comes down to how much you want to quit.

By that logic no one would ever be able to get clean, and we shouldnt even worry about it just put them down, put em in the whole and move on.

One last stab, then I'll let it rest:

Even if an addict is not using, he is still an addict. How do you think addicts are healed? Do they miraculously summon a new found will power?

No. Addicts are cured by treating the underlying symptoms. So, without treating the underlying symptom, you essentially have a dry alcoholic or a clean addict .. a person with an unbearable craving. That unbearable craving, much like other mental disorders, causes the addict to make choices that normal people would call insane (such as using drugs). You see, the mental disorder causes the person to think that using drugs is a good idea ... that it can't hurt ... that it will be fun ... etc, etc. Addiction starts long before the first drug is ever used.

If you're interested, do some research. It's a very interesting subject.

I think most don't think about the true definition to a disease and only associate it with what they have been brought up with as to what a disease is, ie. cancer, aids, STD's. But to say they need medicinal treatment is what I think is riduculous. We spend so much money trying to get these people hooked on a more relaxing drug so they don't commit violent crimes. I'm not sure of an alternative, but I would say they should implement a law to where if someone signed into rehab, they can be held against there will, afterwards, until there clean or some specified time period.

I agree, bro... medicine is not the answer (unless you're treating the an underlying cause, such as clinical depression). I know a lot of helpless addicts who have been cured without medicine.

The sad fact is that no law will help an addict. They can only find a cure when they have a true desire to stop using and are willing to go to any means to do so.

If anyone wants to discuss this on a personal level, feel free to PM me.
