I know for the gym owners you're making a living at the whole gym thing but what about the workers or trainers, do you guys and gals make good money to have a good living. I'm thinking about going into the training business and I'm just curious. -RedMeat

Depending on where you are, you have to give a decent chunk of your money to the gym and, like people have already said, you really need to and it takes time to build a decent list of regular clients. Probably never gonna get rich but you can make a living--good option for some is to do it on the side.

Independent training is the only way to go if you are going to make a living doing it, not just as something to get by for now. Most gyms you work for you average about $20 (out of the $40+ the gym charges per session) per client and you still have to build up your cliental. For that you also have to be good at sales, know the complex words to show your education, but be able to put it in laymens terms most of the time to make your clients comfortable and understand. The advantage to working at a gym is clients are there already, but you have to compete to get them. The established trainers (years of being there) will get them most of the time. As and independent you find your own clients and set your own price, but you usually have to pay the gym(s) you use a fee to train your clients there and it's alot harder to find clients that will commit.
