  • Eight is enough? Try 16 and counting

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas: Michelle Duggar just delivered her 16th child, and she's already thinking about doing it again.

Johannah Faith Duggar, born at 6.30am on Tuesday, local time, weighed in at a healthy 3.4kg.
Her father, Jim Bob Duggar, a former state representative, said mother and child were doing well. Johannah's birth was especially exciting because it was the first time in eight years the family had a girl, he said.

Mr Duggar, 40, and Michelle, 39, says he and his wife want more children.

"We both just love children and we consider each a blessing from the Lord," he said.

"I have asked Michelle if she wants more and she said yes, if the Lord wants to give us some she will accept them."

The Discovery Health Channel filmed Johannah's birth and plans to air a show about the family in May.

The Learning Channel is doing another show about the family's construction project, a 650sqm house that should be finished before Christmas.

The home, which the family from the northwest Arkansas town of Rogers has been building for two years, will have nine bathrooms, dormitory-style bedrooms for the girls and boys, a commercial kitchen, four washing machines and four dryers.

Mr Duggar, who sells real estate, previously lost his bid for the US Senate. He said he expects to run for the state Senate next year but is not ready to make a formal announcement.

Ms Duggar had her first child at age 21, four years after the couple married.

Their children include two sets of twins, and each child has a name beginning with the letter J: Joshua, 17; John David, 15; Janna, 15; Jill, 14; Jessa, 12; Jinger, 11; Joseph, 10; Josiah, 9; Joy-Anna, 8; Jeremiah, 6; Jedidiah, 6; Jason, 5; James, 4; Justin, 2; Jackson Levi, 1; and now Johannah. Not sure of their religion, but they have church service inside their house with other families just like them. Almost sounds like they starting their own cult.

Mormons believe that the number of children you have is the will of God and should not be infered with. In the article, this is exactly the statement that was made by the parents.

Momon, cult, it seems to be the same to me.

I've talked to people that have their own little religious "cult" near where I live. They think any type of birth control or even avoiding intimacy during fertile periods is restricting God's will and is a sin. They have an insane number of children too. They believe God will provide for whatever they need if they do his will, but then you get all these weird living situations and a different standard of living. I'm not gonna judge them but I don't agree.

I really have no reason other than pure cynicism towards people that are that devoted to an idea that they would ruin not only their lives but the lives of their children. This is a strain on the sytem and there is no reason for people to have more than 2 kids.

Whatever the case, we live in a free country, supposedly, and they can fuck and breed as much as they want. I still think they should die

Well...I don't think that anyone should die because of ignorance or having to many children, as long as the family can support those children without federal help. This family is supporting their kids. I'm really not sure how these kids will learn to act in society seeing as how they are homeschooled and only interact with their family or families just like them. You never though, maybe one of them will contribute to society and make a difference but I honestly don't think so.

Why are they a strain on the system? It appears they provide well for their kids, they don't take governement assistance, and they'd have the same beliefs whether they had 2 kids or 20. Should everyone only be allowed 2 kids? Or just those with different beliefs?
For every one of them there are more that are the complete opposite. I once knew a family that had 8 kids and was working on the 9th. They did because it was the will of god. Of course their "father" never stepped gave them a hand out like their Unlce Sam did.

Also from a Cultural standpoint, do people really feel that they need that many children? What is the purpose especially in this day and age when infant mortality rates are very low.

                          Lastly,

I dont care what belief you have. If you bring 20 kids into the over crowded world you need to smacked and fixed.
