Pink plates for DUI's in Florida?

Clearwater, Florida - A state senator wants bright pink license plates on vehicles driven by convicted drunk drivers with limited driving privileges.

Republican senator Mike Fasano of New Port Richey filed a bill earlier this month that requires the first three characters on the
    plate to read "D-U-I."

Fasano says this might embarrass people and make them think twice about drinking and driving.

The bill also says police may stop any vehicle with a D-U-I plate without probable cause to check the driver.

Ohio and Michigan have similar laws in place. Other states have debated the issue, but failed to pass it due to privacy reasons.

A spokesman for the American Civil Liberties Union in Florida says the group is against the pink plates because they punish and ridicule.

dso you think it would be a good idea to point these people out to others or is it an invasion of privacy????

I could see it IF you were a habitual drinker and driver, meaning you had been DUI twice or more. That being said, if you are DUI a third time your liscence should be taken away and never allowed on the streets again. I don't think a person should be tagged after one offense. If a cop spots that tag out on the road, he/she is more likely to get behind you and/or pull you over right away. There are pros and cons to this situation but speaking from personal experience, I have had one DUI and I will not get another do to the fact I have a son and I will not jeapodize his well being, but I do not want this tag on my car if I am rushing him to the doctor. Cops will automatically assume you are DUI again. IMHO!

Perhaps they should do it to people that have had their license restricted more than once too.

Well how about we tag the people who are habitual speeders or red-light runners or people on cell phones with BRIGHT RED tags. They are just as likely to kill innocent people too. I have had friends or known people who were killed by those. Should we tag them after one offense? Also...this is a hot button topic for me.....if you couldn't tell already! :P

I think they should staple the pink license plate to the driver's forehead.

This is not directed at you, just in general. You know I luv ya! :)
Someone that chooses to speed or run a red-light or talk on a phone chooses to do so just like a person decides to get behind the wheel after drinking. In my case the DUI, I believe, was unwarranted. Sure...you're thinking everybody says that after getting a DUI. But I trully had not been drinking a lot....but I had been drinking. With the BAL as low as it is around here, I chose not to blow, so that is automatically a loss of liscence. I have learned my lesson with all the fines, the classes, the lawyer fees, court costs, community service and having to depend on others to get me from point A to point B...IT SUCKS! Plus the dissappointment from my mother was probably the worst, but to put a tag on someone after ONE offense is wrong IMO!

And yes...I know you love me! All the women do! :P

I know its a big pain in the butt and an inconvenience, but apparantly that inconvenience is enough to keep some repeat offenses from happening. Sounds like you learned your lesson, and I'd probably say you're right, you shouldnt be permanently labeled. So I guess its a matter of....where do we draw the line?
I'm not too sure about the "all women love you" comment.....:P
Like I said before, do it twice and then tag them. You are a repeat offender so yes being tagged would be a good idea.

And yes, all the women do love me...they just don't know it yet! ;)

Are we still talking traffic wise? If so, then I would say that if you are a repeat offender of whatever where people are hurt or killed, then yes...by all means tag them! FRONT and BACK of the vehicle.

                      my favorite quote:

Umm isn't that what is supposed to happen to those that break the law?

Of course we could just charge DUIs as attemtped murder.

It's a good thing you stopped at 22....'cause you know 23 would have been crossing the line to "cruel and unusual punishment", LOL.

I would support tagging DUI's but not on a permanent basis. There should be some length of time when the person has "served their time" so to speak. I believe it would actually be unconstitutional to tag them permanently as that would amount to never-ending punishment; a life sentence in effect.

I think the humiliation would make the vast majority think twice to avoid a repeat. Perhaps make the duration longer with successive DUI's or even permanent after a certain number.

This will get shot down as a 4th amendment violation.

I think it's like what, 10 years before the dui falls off? I'm not sure. But that would be a good timeframe. When it falls off, that's when you don't have to sport the pink plate anymore. There would be a massive amount of pink plates on the road, that's for sure. I doubt many people would try to drive drunk if they're sporting that plate already.

I don't know about that. The pink plate indicating a previous (and recent) offence could be taken as probable cause.
