OK this post is going to make me sound like a total loser, but my new confident self can take it. Basically as part of my ongoing efort to turn my life around (I'm mid 20's, have no friends, never had a gf, etc) I am trying to figure out male fashion. What do you recommend for casual wear for a really skinny tall guy? Also, how do you go about buying pants that are the right size, mine always seem too tight on my legs but Im worried if I buy them with bigger waist I will swim in them?

you find out your waistsize so you can find a pair of jeans in your size that you like...plan and simple...ag's, sevens and paper denim and cloth all make quality jeans..as for casual wear polo's, sweaters(stick to solids since you say you dont have style you cant go wrong with that)
also go pick up GQ, maxim, style magazine if you want some tips on fashion..Last edited by slipshady; 01-07-06, 01:19 AM.

Sounds like you are buying straight-leg jeans....try a relaxed fit in your waist size, they shouldn't be tight on your legs.Originally posted by cryptonomiconAlso, how do you go about buying pants that are the right size, mine always seem too tight on my legs but Im worried if I buy them with bigger waist I will swim in them?

If you want something cheaper as far as pants go, check out old navy and see what they have that will work for you. As far as colors, I agree with slipshady and stick with solids or differnt shades of the same colors. If you don't know how to put the proper contrast color together you can look really dumb or too flashy. Just because the shirt has the colors in it, dosn't mean you can use any of those color pants. Jeans and black pants go with everything. But you need to make sure your shoes match. You still need to be careful when putting different shades together. If ever in doubt make your pants darker than the shirt. Also very important is to have your shoes match!

Honestly, if you have the money, this is what I would recommend:
Go to a higher end store (a designer like Deisel would be a good place to start). Find a sales person you like; tell them what you want to look like and have them help you.
You just have to make sure you go to the right kind of place. I would recommend you go someplace that is higher end because there the sales people are not going to be underpaid kids, they are going to know how to dress you. One thing, do not let a gay man do this. They will make you look good, but maybe a little too good (if you get my meaning). Find a woman salesperson and have her help you pick out a few outfits. Make sure you get the basics (I would get a few jeans, say 3-4, and about 5-6 shits). That will handle your casual wear; you will just need to get more shirts to go with the jeans. Most people really don't have more then 3-5 jeans that they actually wear; so don't feel like your "overwearing" them.
For work clothes, I usually shop at Bannana Republic. They will have stuff that makes you look good; and nothing too trendy (well, they do sell that kind of stuff, but trust me you will know) for work. As the last guy said, stick with solid colors at first, get a few pairs of black, brown and gray slacks. The really big thing this year seems to be pants with vertical lines; I love them, I must have 3-4 pairs of them. They make you look leaner, and are very easy to match with just about anything.
I think that the other advice was very good too, I read GQ pretty often, they always have looks in there that you can walk into BR with the picture and have them imitate.

if u have a good build, you should be more concerned with fit over form. dont get carried away with flashy designs, logos, patterns etc. for guys, less is more. if you go nuts with all the latest trends youll probably end up looking like youre trying too hard or youre a metro. for my money, i think theres no better look than a pair of expensive jeans and a fitted white or black tshirt. make sure you also have a nice belt, pair of shoes and hopefully a nice watch too. i think all guys should have a nice watch, its the perfect finishing touch. i find that club monaco makes the best fitting clothes, and it isnt too expensive.

Puma took the words right out of my mouth. Sales people in clothing stores are always asking if you need help, just take them up on their offer, tell them you're looking to buy some casual wear type stuff (jeans, collared shirts, etc...) and ask them what would they suggest for your size/build. Most around here really are there to help you.
LOL at Cory :D

I agree with getting a salesperson to help you and taking a look at some of the mags. like Esq.
Don't be shy with the salesperson, chances are you will never see him/her again.
Don't buy something you're not comfortable in, you won't be comfortable when you wear it and that will be reflected in your attitude and self-confidence when you go out.
Along with the new clothes, a really good haircut will help pull it all together.
If you're not too shy, post up a picture of yourself in one of your new outfits. :)
Good luck and try to have fun picking out new things for yourself!
