Ok guys im buying our first house and I have a huge spare room and I really want to buy my own equipment what are your thoughts on equipment types, machine and free weights... thanks

Aside from free weights, I was considering a Powertec setup for myself. - www.powertecfitness.com - The machines try to replicate hammer strength movements, and although they don't do it as well, they save space. (By the way, Jay Cutler does not really use them.)
This you can check out just for kicks - www.maxrack.com - It seems impractical, but interesting nonetheless.

I do have my own little workout area--I went almost entirely the free weight route because I prefer free weights to machines for a lot of reasons.

That's what I got and is most of what I use now. I've added plate weights but that's pretty much it. If I were to do it again, I don't think I'd change much. I definitely would stick with free weights and couldn't imagine not having a cable x-over, even if it's a single column. I just like the pulley option for a lot of exercises to keep the same tension all the way through the motion.
