Selling Engagement ring

i want to sell my x wifes engagement ring and use some of the money on a new tattoo (she hated my tattoos, so i figure what better way to say F U) and use the rest to take my new lady on a vacation.

Pawn shop - will screw me

retail jewelry shop - will pay better than a pawn but still screw me, and thats assuming they will actually buy it from me.

ebay - maybe

amazon - maybe

i dont have any of the original paperwork on it... but i do have a faxed copy from my insurance company witha receipt on the purchase... it doesnt have the specifications on the diamond, but i can make a fairly educated guess on the statistics..... but i can prove to the buyer what I paid for it and they will see they are getting a decent deal on the ring.

anyway, if anyone has any input it would be appreciated.

Also you can get a simple aprraisal done at a jewlery shop for a 100 bucks or less to give you the specs and just have that along with the reciept.

You must be older than you look Rado. As long as youre paying your bills normally why not spend the money on yourself. Why not call the jewelry place. They probably have a record and if its worth it maybe the vacation could be heading north and get rid of the ring as part of the trip.

The difference between what you pay retail for a diamond and what you can get for it when you want to resell it wholesale (to a jewler) is substantial. Typically you can expect to get about 25% of the retail value for a stone at this size. As for the setting, you won't get much more than melt for it by a jewler. If you put it on Ebay you will likely get wholesale for it but you might get lucky and get a bit more. Princess cut stones are very pretty but they don't retain their value like a round cut would, they're a bit tougher to sell.


You might have better luck listing it for sale in your local paper. Of course, only take cash from a stranger, not a check.

the only real way to know what its worth is to find the certs if you dont have them the value goes down tons! selling to a friend or something you would at least need to know the color and clarity! hopefully you didnt get it from a mall or chain store cuzz they have like a 300% mark up. if you find the certs and want to give a deal i might be intrested! other than that you would have to send it to me so i can get it checked out but like said above i would want a great deal.

I boutght it from a diamond wholesaler in Washington DC..... so no chain in my current area i could take it to.


Rado -- I dont have any bills.... only a few hundered in credit cards.. and a monthly cable and cell bill..... i want something tangable from this ring as a reminder of the stupid mistake i made marrying this girl. i dont see how taking a vacation will show how it hurt me.... she knew she hurt me at first.. but she also knows now that im completely happy about it... infact at the gym the other day i walked in and was in a great mood , said hello to her ... and her response was...."WTF, why are you in such a great mood now... you were never this happy before"... i just gave a big smirk, like you figure it out.

Just keep doing what makes you happy. That seems to get to her the most. Geting a tattoo sounds like the best idea. If you go on vacation and have to show something to her about it... It sounds like you are trying too hard and it does come off as being hurt by her still.
