  • HBO "Assume the Position With Mr. Wuhl"

    http://www.hbo.com/events/rwuhl/

In his first project for HBO since the long-running hit comedy series "Arli$$," Robert Wuhl offers his own freewheeling take on history, examining "the stories that made up America and the stories that America made up."

Appearing before a spirited classroom of actual New York City college students, guest "professor" and history buff Wuhl takes his audience on a lighthearted journey to show how legends are created, exploring familiar chapters in America's past that owe more to popular culture than fact.

I'm watching this right now and it's pretty good.

One thing he has said so far that was interesting is how Columbus said he was going to prove the world was round in 1492, but The earliest globe, called the "Nürnberg Terrestrial Globe", was made during the years 1490-1492 by German mapmaker Martin Behaim.

A few interesting facts off the show:

      The phrase "Upset" comes from

1919 - Horse racing - The derivation of the term "upset" comes from a horse of the same name. In the 1919 Sanford Memorial Stakes, 100-1 longshot Upset handed racing hegemon Man O' War the only loss of the stallion's career. Man O' War had suffered an uncharacterisric poor start - he was still circling behind the starting line when the race began.

Alfred Nobel - the inventor of dynamite, has a peace prize named after him

And sticking the middle finger up at someone comes from The Hundred Years' War beginning in 1337, and ending in 1453. The English had a long bow that the French were terrified of. To fire the bow the men would use there middle finger to draw back and fire, which is pluckin the bow. During this war the French would cut of the middle finger of any English men they captured. Then during one of the last battle the English stuck up there middle fingers showing them of to the french.

It doesn't seem like anyone cared at all before, but there is a "Assume The Position 201" out now.
