For the second straight year, Roy Halladay will be pitching in Yankee Stadium on the final Friday of April. The 2003 American League Cy Young Award winner will hope the results are the same, too.
With the Toronto Blue Jays seeking a fifth win in seven games, Halladay will face Jaret Wright in the opener of a three-game series against the New York Yankees.
On April 29, 2005, Halladay pitched a three-hit shutout in a series opener. He struck out nine and walked one, throwing 89 of 115 pitches for strikes en route to his fourth win of the season.
It was the second straight impressive start against the Yankees for Halladay (2-1, 3.60 ERA), who allowed one run and six hits in eight innings of a 4-2 win on October 2, 2004. In 20 lifetime outings - 18 starts - vs. New York, the 6-6 righthander has gone 8-4 with a 3.21 ERA.
The 28-year-old Halladay returned from a bout of forearm stiffness to allow one run in five innings of an 8-1 win over Boston on Saturday. It was his 14th win in 19 decisions since the beginning of last season.
Wright (0-1, 7.20) will be making his first start and appearance since allowing four runs and eight hits in three-plus innings against Minnesota on April 15. He was not involved in the decision in that game, an eventual 6-5 loss.
Since signing a three-year contract worth $21 million prior to the 2005 season, Wright has gone 5-6 with a 6.16 ERA for the Yankees. In eight lifetime starts vs. Toronto, he is 1-4 with a 9.49 ERA.
The Yankees took Thursday's finale of a three-game series with Tampa Bay behind Derek Jeter's three hits and 6 1/3 strong inning from Shawn Chacon. Jeter has gone 13-for-22 (.591) in his last six games to raise his batting average to .408, second in the AL.
Toronto's Vernon Wells, who has hit safely in 19 of 20 games this season, is third in the league with a .400 average. Wells had a run-scoring single in the ninth inning of Thursday's 7-5 loss to Baltimore, giving him sole possession of the AL lead in RBI (23).
