What experiences have you had meeting people off the Internet?
I've heard plenty of stories from women that mention talking to some guy only to meet him and find that he 5 - 10 years older in person than his pictures. I'll share a story of mine which was pretty dumb on my part. I have a side to me that sometimes gives people too much credit & also occasionally takes a risk.
Anyway, I was on a dating website & this lady contacts me. We start talking & learning more about each other. She shows me some pictures all of which looked really nice with the exception of one or two. She told me those were during her low point...her & her husband splitting, family members sick, etc. I'm cool with all of that as I slipped once in the past myself. At the same time however, I'm not 100% convinced of where she currently is or isn't and if I can completely trust her, so trust was a bigger factor than looks although I take care of myself and wants someone who tries to do the same.
She lived 5 hours away, so I only viewed it as friends. I have a webcam, so I would occasionally chat with her and let her see me on the cam. After a couple of months, she gets brave and gets a webcam herself...tells me that she has one, plugs it in & boom, I realize this is the girl from the 1 or 2 pictures and not the rest. I wasn't ugly and simply stated that the pictures of the girl on the beach were somebody else. She didn't even say bye. She was just gone. Her 16 yr. old daughter comes on the chat & asks what did I say to her mom because she is crying and won't come out of her room. At this point, things kind of fade away...cool.
About 2 months later, she contacts me again and I chat w/her as a friend. She tells me I inspired her to get in better shape, she lost 12 lbs, she is modeling, blah blah blah. We continue to talk more, I tell her what I think of girls that I meet, I only see her and I as friends & that story. I start getting to the point where I'm a little more comfortable with her, and I can see her as a friend. She has two daughters that she adores, takes care of, etc, so I'm thinking how bad can she really be.
Well, it comes time for my knee surgery & I don't really have any friends around in town. My mom offered to come from NC, but I kind of felt like mom would drive me crazy and the procedure would be minor. The girl tells me that she wants to come take care of me & that if I see her in person that I'll fall for her even though I've told her I only want to be friends. This being the case I tell her she can come take care of me. I offer to buy her ticket & she wouldn't let me, so she buys her own ticket and her parents rent her a limousine to and from my house.
So she shows up the night before my surgery. The limo driver didn't follow the directions correctly, so she was an hour late. I ended up talking to the limo driver on how to get him to my place & you could hear the pain in his voice from having to deal with her bitching him out. Well, when she arrived, I could feel the pain too. She gets out of the car all pissed off, no nice to meet you or anything. It is just "have you got my bags" & I couldn't even let her in my house first. She made me go in first, so she could look at my butt!
A work buddy had swung by to check her out before she got here. She was pissed off that I had a friend at my house & she camped out in the bathroom for about 20 minutes. She finally came out and my friend took off. On his way home, he called me and asked if I wanted him to call and make sure I was alright later, and he was laughing his ass off.
Anyway, I then make it a point to let her know w/in 10 minutes that we're only going to be friends. In the meantime in my mind, I'm kinda freaking out. I'm thinking oh my god I have a complete stranger in my house & what in the hell am I going to do?
So the next morning she gets me to and from the surgery without any incident, but then she told me that I had to be flat on my back for 48 hours and how I couldn't do this and I couldn't do that. I told her that I wanted to see the paper work, so hesitantly, she brings me my post op sheets 1 by 1. I tell her to read everything she wants and then bring all of them over at one time. It turned out everything she was saying was a lie (go figure). She wanted me to be helpless, so she could stay longer than planned. I told her she didn't have to stay the entire weekend, so she changes her flight and left the next morning.
A month or so later I'm sitting in a beauty shop waiting to get my haircut, and I'm flipping through an American Idol magazine. Low and behold, I discover a Kelly Clarkson picture that is the exact one that the other girl used on her myspace page. I'm guessing that she was a fan club member (at 35) or something, and as the pictures started becoming available to the public all of the modeling shots disappeared off her page.
Needless to say, yes, that was pretty stupid on my part to bring in a complete stranger, & like the old saying goes, "if it seems too good to be true, it probably is". Thankfully, she stayed in the guest bedroom, and I didn't wake up like John Bobbit. I feel fortunate that everything went relatively incident free.
