Video question

I have downloaded some backup copies of videos off of the net. I wanted to put them onto a DVD to keep, but I'm running into a problem. The way I usually do it is download a .avi file in Divx format and use a little program that converts it and burns to a DVD. The files that I downloaded are an .avi file, but when I tried to load with Divx Player, it says error, This file contains unknown video data. The description says Video Data: FourCC code H264. I did a search for this on the net and downloaded a couple codec packs and it still won't play through Divx Player. I downloaded a package called Sorm Coded 5 and it has it's own media player. It plays the files and they look fine. My question is.. does anyone know how to convert these to a useable format or a program that would do this and burn to a DVD? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You need to encode your .avi file into mpeg-2 format. Google for avi to mpeg converters. Once you have an mpeg, you can then create a dvd using many freeware dvd authoring programs that are available (search on google for dvd authoring tools). It is up to you to decide how fancy you want to make it - basically, you can set up menus, chapters, etc. just like a movie dvd if you wish.

It's a lot of fun but it takes a lot of time!

I use a program called adobe encore to make all my dvd's, it converts them from .avi to the proper format, but it's an expensive program. Most video editors now come with dvd authoring software. But if you're looking for something free go with what Scrumhalf said. Good luck bro.
