PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was injured in a motorcycle crash Monday morning and taken to a hospital.
"He was alert and conscious," said Ernie Roman, shift commander for the Allegheny County emergency service.
Steelers Dave Lockett, outside Mercy Hospital, confirmed the accident but did not provide additional details.
In only his second year in the NFL, Roethlisberger helped guide the Steelers to the Super Bowl championship last season.
Calls to Roethlisberger's agent, Leigh Steinberg, were not immediately returned.
The 24-year-old Roethlisberger has said in the past that he prefers not to wear a helmet when riding his motorcycle. He has pointed out Pennsylvania's 35-year-old state law requiring helmets to be worn was amended to make helmets optional.
In May 2005, Steelers coach Bill Cowher lectured Roethlisberger on the dangers of riding without a helmet.
"He talked about being a risk-taker and I'm not really a risk-taker. I'm pretty conservative and laid back, but the big thing is to just be careful," Roethlisberger said at the time. "I'll just continue to be careful. I told him we don't ever ride alone, we always ride in a group of people, and I think it makes it even more safe.

Ben Roethlisberger, quarterback of the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers, was injured in a motorcycle accident on Monday.
WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh confirmed that Roethlisberger was involved in the accident, which happened around 11:30 a.m. ET.
KDKA-TV and WTAE-TV were reporting that Roethlisberger was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and flew over the handlebars, hit his head on the windshield of another car before falling to the ground. One witness said he was groggy, said his name was Ben and was bleeding from the head.
"He was alert and conscious," Ernie Roman, shift commander for the Allegheny County emergency service, told the Associated Press.
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is reporting on its website that a veteran city police officer said Roethlisberger hit the windshield "with pretty good force."
Roethlisberger was taken to Mercy Hospital, according to the reports, and there was no word on the extent of his injuries. Pittsburgh police have closed the streets surrounding the scene of the accident.
Roethlisberger, with a 22-3 regular-season record and 4-1 in the playoffs, became the youngest quarterback to win the Super Bowl when the Steelers defeated the Seattle Seahawks in February. The Steelers went 15-1 during Roethlisberger's rookie season in 2004, advancing to the AFC Championship Game before losing to the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.

I just saw the special update on ESPN. Hope he's going to be okay. You can say what you want about his ability and what he can't do but plain and simple nobody has ever started their career as a QB with as many W's. Always seems like a friendly guy on tv too.

He's in serious condition but injuries not life threatening

PITTSBURGH --Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who last season became the youngest quarterback in NFL history to lead his team to a Super Bowl title, was badly injured in a motorcycle crash Monday morning and set for surgery.
Roethlisberger, 24, was in serious but stable condition in an operating room, said Dr. Larry Jones, chief of trauma at Mercy Hospital. Jones spoke before going into surgery, The Associated Press reported.
"He was alert and conscious" at the scene of the accident, said Ernie Roman, shift commander for the Allegheny County emergency service, told AP.
ESPN.com's John Clayton reported that early indications were the injuries were not life-threatening.
Roethlisberger, the team's first-round choice in the 2004 draft, was transported to the trauma unit of nearby Mercy Hospital.
Witnesses told authorities that Roethlisberger's motorcycle collided with a car near a downtown intersection and that Roethlisberger's head hit the windshield and was bleeding.
Steelers officials have confirmed the accident, which occurred on Second Avenue near the intersection of 10th Street in Pittsburgh, around 11:30 a.m. The route is one often taken in traveling to the Steelers' facility in the Southside section of the city.
The Associated Press reported a silver Chrysler New Yorker with damage to the front passenger fender was removed and Roethlisberger's bike was loaded onto a flatbed truck. Police were detouring traffic around the crash scene as onlookers and media gathered.
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported that Roethlisberger wasn't wearing a helmet.
In the wake of a motorcycle accident sustained by Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow last spring, Roethlisberger spoke about his own fixation with motorcycles and his penchant for riding without a helmet.
Roethlisberger continued to ride after Winslow's accident and that angered Terry Bradshaw, who quarterbacked the Steelers to four Super Bowl victories during the 1970s.
Visiting the Steelers' training camp last summer, Bradshaw remarked: "Ride it when you retire."
I told him we don't ever ride alone, we always ride in a group of people, and I think it makes it even more safe."
One of his agents, Ryan Tollner, is in route to Pittsburgh for what was supposed to be a pre-planned trip and will arrive later Monday.
One witness told KDKA-TV that Roethlisberger was conscious but appeared disoriented before he was taken from the scene to Mercy Hospital.

Not wearing a helmet is simple natural selection if you're ignorant enough to ride w/o it then you deserve to die (I don't wish it upon anyone but it doesn't take a genius to figure out the possible end result)! The wind blowing through your hair and the 'free' feeling is nice and all, but it doesn't take much to split the melon.
On that note, I'm glad he is goingto be ok cuz even though I'm not a Steelers fan, I enjoy seeing him play.

9 hours of surgery to fix him up!
What I had heard on the radio this morning, but it wasn't on ESPN, was that he had broken his jaw, lost a lot of his teeth, several cuts to the back of the head, broken collar bone and both knees were messed up. Who knows really, other than the surgeons and his family.

This kind of stuff kind of pisses me off. I almost don't feel sympathy for them. I mean what are people trying to prove that don't wear a helmet? Maybe it's more comfortable or whatever (although I have never felt uncomfortable wearing a helmet) but damn... What do you notice about most critical motorcycle accidents? 1. They weren't wearing a helmet and/or 2. They were fucking around and lost control. This is a perfect example how a helmet would have probably left Ben with just some bad road rash.

While I do agree with most of your post...he would have had more than just road rash. His knees would not have been saved by his helmet.Originally posted by ShibbyThis kind of stuff kind of pisses me off. I almost don't feel sympathy for them. I think you know what he means and I think you know that he didnt mean that his knees would not have been saved from a helmet. Bottom line here is this, this story would not even have made the news if he was wearing a helmet.Originally posted by bad14uWhile I do agree with most of your post...he would have had more than just road rash.
