That's what I was thinking, but they're saying that his knee injuries are minor.

PITTSBURGH -- Steelers star Ben Roethlisberger, the youngest quarterback to lead a team to the Super Bowl championship, broke his jaw and nose in a motorcycle crash Monday in which he was not wearing a helmet.

Roethlisberger remained in serious but stable condition after seven hours of surgery that ended at approximately 9 p.m. ET, according to Dr. Daniel Pituch, chief of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Mercy Hospital. His condition is not expected to change throughout the evening, Pituch said at a news conference.

"He suffered multiple facial fractures," Pituch said. "All of the fractures were successfully repaired. His brain, spine, chest and abdomen appear to be without serious injury. And there are no other confirmed injuries at this time."

The doctors declined to release further information at the family's request.

ESPN.com's John Clayton has confirmed that Roethlisberger also suffered a 9-inch laceration to the back of his head, has lost or chipped a number of teeth and has minor injuries to his knees from hitting the pavement.

A broken jaw normally takes seven weeks to heal. It is not known how long it will take for the other injuries to heal. Pittsburgh's training camp begins in late July.

Jay Williams from Duke ended his career with the Chicago Bulls in a motorcycle accident. Damn talented player too. Could have had a great career.

That's really too bad. I hated Pittsburg, but I have to give Ben props as a damn good quarterback. What a shame.

:hmmm: The youngest QB to win a Superbowl and win it in his 2nd year.... and it wouldn't have made the news if he had been wearing a helmet? BS! It would still have made major headlines if he had been wearing a helmet and everyone would be saying that his life was saved by that helmet!

he should be used to wearing a helmet... no one plays football without one, why should riding a motorcycle be any different!

LOL. You take every word literally. Let me see if I can be more clear. Had he been wearing a helmet the news would have been like you said. He would have some cuts and such. Instead we are talking about his career possibly being over. That is what me and shibby are saying, instead you are latching on to every word and trying to make an arguement out of it..

Not trying to make an arguement at all. Just going by what I see in your post.

And guys in football still get knocked out and shit. Imagine if they didn't wear anything. I guess if they didn't, they would be more careful. Which brings us to the real moral of this story....DON'T FUCK AROUND ON A MOTORCYCLE.

I have never rode a bike without a helmet. Hence the reason I said "Maybe it's more comfortable or whatever (although I have never felt uncomfortable wearing a helmet) but damn..." It's like wearing your seatbelt in a car. Sure maybe you won't ever need it, and maybe some fluke accident could happen because you are wearing it; but it's most likely to be what saves you. I wonder how good his head will feel the rest of his life because he felt more comfortable for the short ride on his bike.

:hmmm: This explains a lot now! A gust of wind f'ed up your lite-ass on a bike while not wearing a helmet. Now it all makes sense. :laughnew:

When you're up on one for too long, the front wheel stops spinning or is spinning much slower than you're travelling and when you come down, it could send you into a high speed wobble. So, you could have wiped out after a while anyway.

I think this has to do with respect as well. The owner of the team and the coach talked to him about it already. Yea, they didnt tell him to wear a helmet but they did tell him to be careful. It doesnt take a genius to see that although they didnt say "Wear a helmet," it's basically what they were insinuating. Now to respect the owner of the team and the coaches wishes he should've followed through and just wore a damn helmet.

Now yes, he's a grown man, it's not a law, and he can do what the hell he wants

                            BUT

there are a lot of teammates and fans that depend on him and pay lots of money to see him play. Not to mention his parents have to watch him play a very dangerous sport every sunday during the season in which he can get seriously hurt at any moment......Why would he want them to have to worry about something in the offseason that doesnt have to be worried about nearly as much if he'd just wear a helmet.

In hearing his interview last year on the subject he seemed like a really hard headed guy who's basically going to do what he wants to do. I think he needs to wise up a bit and respect all those who love him and count on him and just wear a damn helmet in the future. Like I've already said though, I hope he ends up just fine, but if he doesnt, I don't think the steelers should have to pay any part of the rest of his salary.

Bikes are dangerous, no question about that. But you know what bro? People will always ride with or without the helmet, people will always get hurt or die...I'm not going to let something like that scare me away from enjoying myself.

I could get shot when I'm working, yet I do my job. :)

Sort of on topic, but you will think a little different when you have your first kid ;) I still love them, but I don't want to get one anymore, at least right now. I have thought about getting a dirt bike to play around on, that way I can have fun at much lower speeds and there's not other cars around. But I don't know if there is anywhere to ride one there in Tampa.

The thing about it is, they told the guy to be careful and they didnt tell him to wear a helmet. There are rules during the season about not riding motorcycles and whatnot that is in the player's contract. He didnt break any rules and if the management wanted him wearing a helmet they should have said so, especially since they knew he didnt. However, if it were me and I was working to make millions in a professional sport I dont know if I would get on a bike even WITH a helmet. Its just to easy to get a career ending injury, especially in such a physical sport like football.

I ride a Harley and I have only ridden without a helmet a couple times but it is much better IMO. Its kinda dumb but anything else, (rice rockets/dirtbikes/etc.) I wouldnt even want to ride without a helmet. Also, I wear a basically worthless shell of a helmet anyway but I did just order a nice new Simpson helmet today. Not because of this story, mostly for long rides, the wind wears you out after a while.

                                Ramble over.
